Unread message essage badge error

My stock message app and notification centre are both indicating that I have 1 unread text message. A little yellow number '1' badge is showing on my message app icon on my home screen, and also my notification centre says 'New Message' ..... but I have read AND deleted ALL my messages! Is this a software fault? I have tried deleting message data, cache and removing the app icon from my home screen but this error will not go away... Please help.

Sadly after receiving a test text from my wife and opening it the **bleep** thing is back, so I did it all again just in case and it worked again until I get a text... Back to square one. I've just read about Textra on Play so I'm considering using that instead. I Dont know what else there is to try unless there is a software update, so until then I might have to just ignore it...

You could try performing a system repair as this will often fix issues however this will factory reset your phone

Switch off your phone and unplug from Pc (Hold volume up and power for around 10 seconds)
Start PC Companion and select Support zone then Update my phone/tablet then in Blue Repair my phone/tablet and follow the onscreen instructions - When prompted connect your phone still switched off holding volume down or back button - This should start the repair or reformat process

If you are using Windows 8/8.1 or a 64bit operating system then adjust the settings for PC Companion and run in compatibility mode and chose Windows 7 or XP

Thommo I actually factory reset the phone today and it dissapeared before opening messages again.. As soon as I opened a message it reappeared and will not go again.. This is ridiculous..

I am having an identical problem since the last software upgrade, and have tried all the steps mentioned. No luck. Seriously annoying. Let's hope the next upgrade fixes this while I use Hangouts as the alternative in the meantime!

I am having this problem. It's been driving me crazy for a while. There is a fix if you can find the badge provider on other android phones. Not on the Sony though. I bothers me so much I am considering change back to my old Samsung.

Ok, the 1 disappeared, but as soon as I received a new message the original rogue 1 reappeared, unfortunately...

In case you have this issue first try the following:

1. Switch to Hangouts for SMS (Hangouts -> Settings -> SMS -> SMS disabled.

2. Check so that you don't have any unread messages in Hangouts.

3. Go to Settings -> Apps -> All -> Messaging -> Clear data -> OK (this will not delete your messages).

4. Now open Messaging and confirm that you want to use it as your messaging app.

In case this doesn't help, make a backup of your messages using PC Companion or a backup application from Google Play. Then download this app and delete all SMS/MMS using it, restart your phone and then restore your backup.
