Unread message essage badge error

My stock message app and notification centre are both indicating that I have 1 unread text message. A little yellow number '1' badge is showing on my message app icon on my home screen, and also my notification centre says 'New Message' ..... but I have read AND deleted ALL my messages! Is this a software fault? I have tried deleting message data, cache and removing the app icon from my home screen but this error will not go away... Please help.

Hi, my Messaging shows 2 unread texts. I've tried every advice given above - nothing works; every time I get a new text, the label changes to 3 unread texts and gets back to 2 after reading the only actually unread one. Please help, can't tell you how irritating this little thing is.

Edit: No, wait, actually the advice of Thrux worked - kudoz, Thrux!

Hey I tried all the suggestions in this thread. Thommo's suggestion lasted for the night but then woke up to a new text that re-engaged the 2 that would show for no reason!
If it helps at all in solving my problem, I got the 2 unread text error (only the number 2 above the message app, not in notification bar) after I tried downloading 2 mms' that never downloaded. An error appeared saying the original sent mms could not be found, and since then it shows I have two unread texts.. Please help, I've tried everything mentioned in this thread with no permanent success!

I'm having the same problem too. Recently done the first step. Clear all data. But having the same problem after I received new message. What should I do?

Hangout trick worked for me. Slightly_smiling_Face

After disabling (and deleting cache&data) in SMS, I switched to Hangouts. There was an SMS from "unknown sender". I deleted that SMS, than force stop, delete cache&data from Hangouts and switched back to SMS. The annoyed number was gone. I did also test with sending/receiving new SMS - everything works as it should. Also, no SMSs were deleted.

Ok, message icon displays 1 in the bubble above it,.. i think i have the solutoion to the problem.. Install Hangouts, and run it. go to settings and make it your default sms app.then go to messages inside hangouts, and your messages that were in the default message app will appear.. also, 1 or more other messages will too!!! delete all but the ones you know are in your default message app. ( or simply delete all if you can). Then go back out and open default message app.. it will ask if you wish it to be your default one again.. accept it and hey presto!!
