Unread message essage badge error

My stock message app and notification centre are both indicating that I have 1 unread text message. A little yellow number '1' badge is showing on my message app icon on my home screen, and also my notification centre says 'New Message' ..... but I have read AND deleted ALL my messages! Is this a software fault? I have tried deleting message data, cache and removing the app icon from my home screen but this error will not go away... Please help.

Why is a so simple problem so difficult to solve ? Why can't Sony give a clear answer to a clear problem ? Why are there no reset options on every counter of messaging apps ? And where is "badge provider" who seems to transfer info to these counters ? Apps incoming messages becomes always false at a time or another. Everybody will experience this... Soon or later...

In my case this issue was caused by received (but not downloaded) MMS messages. I disabled messaging service as Thommo sugested but than used second service (in my case Hangouts) where I was able to cofirm unread MMS related messages. After reenabeling original Messaging service issue was gone.

This issue has come back around it seems, there are several people on the play store with this I think since the recent major update to Google Messenger. It does temporarily fix after a reinstall but for me comes back soon after. I have tried all the steps aforementioned.
