Hi all,
I have problems with my WiFi speed. First I found youtube to load videos quite slowly. After that I used "Oookla Speedtest" to check network speed. I have 6MBit DSL-connection at home, but if I use the speedtest after the WiFi has been switched on for some minutes, I only get ~1Mbits on the Xperia Z3 compact. If I switch WiFi off and on again on the phone, I get the expected ~5Mbits. This happens not only at home, but also at work and at my parents house. WiFi router types are different in all the 3 places.
The problem persists even If I stand 1m away from the router. WiFi reception is shown to be very good on the phone. My old iPhone 4S does not have this problem. Since turning off and on WiFi on the Z3 compact solves that problem for some minutes, I blame it on the phone itself. I already tried turning off and on the phone, as well as factory reset. Problem persists. Any hints?
Thanks a lot!

For everyone who has the same problem: logfiles were sent today ... let´s see if they contain useful information ...
Hello Noize
After waiting for my slow down to happen again i can confirm i tried the following:
turning airplane mode off and on again and that only temporarily cured the issue, say for like a few minute. also i tried turning wifi off and back on again and same results.
also i tried to turn off mobile data during the time of the issue re appering and that also does not make a dffrence.
it seems the problem just happens and random times and the only thing i find that helps is to keep turning the wifi or airplane mode on and off and the speed will go back to max for a few minutes then back down then i just leave checking the speed for a few hours and then the speed will be back running at max.
i really hope sony are aware of this problem
sorry for slow responses.... i work very long strange hours at the moment....
Thanks alot noize for providing us with the logs. I have escalated this internally and will update you as soon as i have more information.
Hi viklathia77,
no problem, I know those times of working 16 hours a day
Glad I´m not in such a phase at the moment ...
Concerning the mobile data off during the problem => I have the same result. If I switch them off while the problem exists, it would not change a thing. But if I switch them off, turn WiFi off and on again ("WiFi reset"), the problem won´t occur as long as mobile data is off. That´s why I´m using "Tasker" right now to automatically switch mobile data off as soon as I´m connected to my home WiFi and switch mobile data on when I leave my home. It´s only a workaround, but better than dealing with these slow connections
Maybe you´d like to try with mobile data disabled for a longer period. You should try the speedtest right away afterwards... if its slow , turn WiFi off and on, but then the problem should not occur as long mobile data is off ...

Marcus
Thanks Noize
Maybe i will get the tasker app and use that as a work around until the issue is fixed
i will keep trying diffrent methods of trying to fix the issue at the same time.
my sister is purchasing the same phone soon so it will be intresting to see if her handset does the same thing. when she visits i will try both handsets when the issue arises to see if its just my handset of if its problem within all the handsets....
I find it variable too, to the point where it slowly loses connection.
I've tried on a variety of networks: home, work, public, friends, and it's always the same. Sometimes it's very good, often it doesn't work. I've tried restarting the phone with occassional success, and restarting routers with occassional success. It's difficult to spot a pattern.
I ran speedtest on all my devices at home when they were individually connected to the wifi:
A laptop
My old HTC Desire X
A Nexus 7
Other phones that have worked just fine on my wifi include the Z1, iphones, moto X, various Samsungs.
Speedtest speeds come back at 25mbps as expected. However my Z3 often can't even connect to the speedtest to start the speed test, or disconnects halfway through having reached maybe 1.5mpbs.
I tried a factory reset as well as a full upgrade to all the latest and greatest FW & SW.
Hopefully it is found to be a phone fault and we get a fix soon.
JuneBob,
some things you can try for now:
1) instead of restarting the whole phone, please try to disable and reenable the WiFi. This cures the problem for me ... at least for some minutes
2) Disable the mobile data connection, disable WiFi and reenable WiFi again. Mobile data should remain off. See if the problem still occurs
3) I´ve read in some posts that bluetooth might be a problem for the WiFi ... if it is enabled, try to switch it off
4) some folks reported that they had problems when the "barcoo" app was installed. If you use it, try to uninstall it and test again
Would you mind trying this and give feedback?
Viklathia77, if you want to try Tasker, you have to create a new "profile" there ... second post in that link will show you the steps needed:
Hey everyone, I got news!!!
The problem does not only exist on Xperia Z3C, but most likely on all Android phones. I found this thread which exactly discusses my/our problem and gives the rootcause in the end:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=64706
For those who do not want to read the whole thread, just read post #115 and #136 and maybe #112.
To everyone who wants to try to reproduce this problem (and I´m sure it will happen to everyone who tries it):
1) make sure WiFi speed is fine
2) set mobile network mode to "2G only"
3) send an MMS to yourself (important is to send an MMS, NOT an SMS)
4) check WiFi speed again => slow
5) switch WiFi off and on => speed should be fine again
Everyone who has access to ADB can have a look at the TCP buffer sizes using:
adb shell cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_rmem adb shell cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_wmem
In the "bad" case I get:
adb shell cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_rmem: 4092 8760 11680
adb shell cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_wmem: 4096 8760 11680
which represents the values that should be used for GPRS! You can get them using:
adb shell getprop net.tcp.buffersize.gprs
In the "good" case I get:
adb shell cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_rmem: 524288 2097152 4194304
adb shell cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_wmem: 262144 524288 1048576
which represents the values that should be used for WiFi! You can get them using:
adb shell getprop net.tcp.buffersize.wifi
This perfectly explains why it happens to some users only, why it may happen sporadically, why it seems to happen in certain places (network coverage) and why it does not happen when mobile data connection is switched off.
There is a commit to android that patches that problem
https://android.googlesource.com/platform/frameworks/base/+/30a2bc8
Since we are on 4.4.4 I wonder if this fix is already included or not. Rickard, can you check back? Or is there any way to see the (open)sources of the Z3C android system to verify the patch is included?

Marcus
Hi all.
I have similar issues (and worse) with my Z2, which I've owned since june this year.
In my house, I have a 75/75 (symmetric) Mbps fiber connection from my ISP.
All devices which are permanently connected, are wired to a physical gigabit network, and all access points (Apple Airport Extremes) are also fed through the physical cabling, and there are no wireless repeaters.
The APs provide 802.11ac wireless coverage for both floors and all areas in the house.
The APs present the same SSIDs, uses the same WPA2 PSK's, but run on different channels, and are set in bridge mode, so all devices, regardless of wired/wireless, are provided with IP addresses from ONE DHCP server.
So far -any- device -apart from the Sony XZ2 and my previous Samsung SGiii- (which also ran KitKat) have had NO problems at all, *regardless* of they were using the 2.4Ghz or the 5Ghz band, and regardless of vendor and model.
But for some reason, my Z2 and my previous SGIII have problems with the wifi---
1) Network freeze:
The SGIII sometimes 'froze' if I entered a zone with weak coverage, but it could be fixed by toggling the wifi.
The SAME thing goes on with the Sony Z2, but it doesn't help if I disable-reenable wifi on this phone. Bummer.
2) Slow speeds. The Sony Z2 never reaches more than 20-25 mbps on the OOKLA test even if I literally put the phone on top of an AP.
3) If the wifi optimisation features in the phone are enabled, the phone complains of 'bad' coverage (even on top of an AP). (Turning off all but one AP has no effect) and the connection is often dropped altogether.
4) When using streaming apps on the Z2, I sometimes experience connection drops and buffering. (Spotify, Viaplay, etc)
When using a laptop (on wireless) at the same location: NO problems at all, with the same (PC versions) applications.
I have tried --
DISABLING mobile network access - has no effect (other than me not getting ANY connection)
DISABLING Wifi optimisation - has no effect
DISABLING Avoid bad connection - has no effect
ENABLING Leave wifi on in hibernate mode - has no effect
Factory reset - has no effect.
The phone has all updates.
