Auto rotate not working (Sony Xperia z5 Premium)

Didn't think I would be back so fast, but I have another issue that suddenly started happening.

Checking to see if anyone else has this issue, or if there's a fix,or even if it's a known problem.

My auto-rotate stopped working. Was working fine the last 24 hours, give or take. Which is the duration of how long I've had the device.

I checked all the settings, and googled around, so I restarted my phone, now it works again.

Didn't know about the diagnostic tool until after I rebooted the device and it started working again.

If it stops working, I'll definitely run diagnostics.

But until then; known issue? Anyone else experience the same thing? A permanent fix?

After reboot did not fix my issue, a Google search led me here and I tried the @JonShipman trick mentioned in this thread and hit the long side of the phone into my other hand. It worked! Thanks!

@Brian1

I'm sorry to hear that Slightly_frowning_Face

I see you recently were in contact with your Local support about this as well and as i understand it, it the accelerometer didn't work when you tested it in the phones service test menu? If the software repair didn't help i recommend that you contact them again for assistance with having your phone sent in for repairs.

Hi rickard

I tried removing both sim and sd card , restarting , shutdown then reinsert the sim and sd card and all seems to be working ok for the moment ☺

Fingers crossed

E6653 here - issues before 6.0. Even worse now. The hitting the leading edge of the phone trick used to work. Now, nothing. Now the gyroscope test - the ball goes through the walls...
Oddly, the GPS Status app I mentioned a few weeks ago as having worked with the gyroscope and accelerometer still works. Has to be a software bug. The adaptive brightness has at least been fixed. Battery life terrible.

For anyone questioning whether the auto rotate issue is hardware related, try this video, select the vr glasses icon and rotate and move your phone from side to side. If it moves as . For me, despite my gyroscope and accelerometer appearing broken, it does work. Same with the Google Street View app... Has to be OS related. And yes, I've tried resetting, pc companion etc.

And here's a couple of screenshots of the GPS app I mentioned before - look at the pitch/roll and accel (g) readings and in the other photo, the sensors all work and show values.

Local support btw is useless as it's a UK customized phone in the US.

Btw that YouTube link in my last post - open it in the YouTube app, not chrome or you won't see the vr button.

Have found a kind of permanent fix for the auto rotate / accelerometer and gyroscope not working.
Trick is to set to auto rotate, load up that 3rd party app "GPS Status and Toolbox", go to the menu, select "Diagnose Sensors", tilt and turn the phone and watch the accelerometer and gyroscope sensors work and screen rotate, then don't close the app, just go to another app like Chrome or Maps and you should see auto rotate work.
Don't close down that GPS app, or it'll stop working again. Whenever Android decides to free up memory and kill that GPS app, auto rotate won't work. Just open the app back up again and it'll work again.
It's a stupid workaround, but it works (for me at least..) and tells me this is all software related.
Basically, Sony's OS doesn't seem to be telling the sensors to do anything. The third party app is telling those sensors to do something.
This auto rotate issue btw has made it to a Phone Arena review posted yesterday, so Sony really need to get on top of this and get it fixed, especially as it's not hardware related and must be going through hundreds of replacement handsets for folk posting them in.
