The solution is to set display brightness in MANUAL mode, disable any automatic features.

When I tried to enable automatic mode I got for the second time the black screen problem, so I never use automatic brightness until next firmware update...

Hi guys since the lastest 534 update i havent had no problems so far in regards to the screen going blank brightness levels i would recommend a repair of software using sus.

I had this problem as well. Yesterday evening I wanted to unlock my Z1 (3 days old) and the display flickered and turns to black, but it did still "glow" and the indication led was still on. Tried to hold down the powerbutton  with and without the volume up but nothing happened. Tried the hard reset (red button) with a pen, nothing happened. This morning I gave it once a try again but now with a paperclip on the red button. This worked (obviously a pen wasn't able to push the red button deep enough) and the Z1 turned off. Didi a restart and it's now up and running again.

At time of the blackout my Z1 has enabled bluetooth and OB was on. I'm running software version 518 at the moment. Tried to update to a newer version but the Z1 say that no newer software version is available.

I had the same problem for the first time after 6 days of owning the Z1. Only way I could fix it was with the red button in the sim tray. For now my phone is working. Also battery drain on standby even with stamina mode on is not good. I hope these issues get shorted out soon because I it is totally unacceptable. I love the phone and I am a sony fan but I will return it back and take another phone from different brand if this happends again.

I have had this problem again..and I am also running this firmware.

In the UK (and I guess the rest of Europe) there is no sign of 534 or more Slightly_frowning_Face

I can confirm .534 firmware has rolled out in Europe, we got it already for about a week (in Poland exactly).

But yes, problem is till there even in .534. This sounds stupid, I know, but for now we can only keep resetting the phone until it starts without the delay between two logos (sony -> xperia). Once it does it runs like a charm, and the new update even almost doubled my battery life.

This will be fixed, and another update is coming.

I am on 534 (in the UK) and had the black screened twice. Plugging the charger in makes no difference and only way around the problem is to hard re-boot.

O2 are now replacing my device tomorrow but I don't really hold much hope if this is a bug in the software. I don't use BT and no devices are permitted to conenct to my Z1 but the black screen still occurs.

Are folks saying it is better to have adpative brightness on or off? Does the x- reality setting make much difference as both times this has been set to on.

Also the battery is terrible no way as good as the Samsung Note 2 ( but I appreciate it is a slower processor).

It seems like some software bug, yes. Too many phones are affected with it.

My one never suddenly died just like that, it only has problem with reboots. I have to reset it several times.

But it doesn't matter if adaptive brightness and/or x-reality is turned on or off in any combination. If I reboot it, it always does this to me again and again.

The main difference here is that .534 almost doubled my battery life.. I don't bother with charging it the first day, no matter what I do. At the end of the second day sometimes I have 20% left, sometimes 40%, this varies. But no I actually don't care about it on the first day.

mft 1960 what network are you with? I have yet to get this update? Have you got Stamina Mode on as I think the battery life is good (all things considered)

Just to clarify

it is not the auto screen brightness setting (adapt to lighting conditions) that is linked to the slow boot issue - it is the "optimised backlight " setting and it should be ticked/enabled - my phone has been working without issue for 2 weeks now
