Xperia X8 with Android 2.2 and above?

Hi,

I own the amazing K750i, still in love with the phone but planning to upgrade to a many-in-one device.

I don't want to carry a music player, GPS, camera, FM radio and phone as separate devices and I found X8 as one of the few phones which looks good as well as have all the mentioned functions available for a reasonable rate. (I read others are kind of hyped, tying to keep up with the selling price of iPhone).

K750i was good because I could customize it a lot.

But Alas!! Android 1.6 for Xperia X8?

Questions:

1. Is upgrade possible to Android 2.2 (Froyo) or above? (2.1 is still not good as I cannot move apps to SD card)

(For K750i I got 2 firmware updates at least!!)

2. Can multiple playlists be created for the music you have on the phone? (I hear music from around 6 different languages)

3. Is there a limit on the number of applications that can be installed? (Other that internal memory (128MB) which 2.2 or above can solve)

4. Will there be a X8 Pro or something of that sort soon for a slightly higher price tag? (Possibly a black model with 2.2 and a camera flash +)

(I know this cannot be answered now, but out of curiosity...)

5. With there be more talk time and standby time with Android 2.1 and above?

Regards,

Winny

Hi Anix8

Are you still using the SE Froyo 2.2.9. How is the performance of the X8 so far ? Any known issues ?

I have already rooted the phone and done a xrecovery backup. Waiting to upgrade

Is upgrading to SE Froyo 2.2.9 is recommendable or directly to Gingerdx ?

If you have the link for the SE Froyo 2.2.9 ROM kindly provide here.

I have installed [ROM] kuyaDROID (android 2.3.5)and its perfect - everyting works even better than original rom, additionaly I have installed dualtouch. battery lasts longer much clear, simply BETTER!

(never again sony)

Edit - Bad language, even if mis spelled, the meaning is perfectly clear and is against the forum guidelines.

Mirkjo, nice to hear about the 2.3.5 running fine on X8.

When did you upgrade it and how long you have been using and are there any known issues to you ?

Also if possible copy the ROM(whichever you've been using successfully) here and a brief guide or a link to the guide/video will be helpful for those like me planning to upgrade their 2.1.1 stock to the advanced version.

Thanks in advance.

you will find this particular rom within this link, but there are other good roms available at the same site!

I am using this rom from August - so far no issues (if you dont temper with overcloacking - that is not stable yet). This is what my quadrant test shows:

Hi,

I have successfully upgraded my Xperia X8 from 2.1.1 to 2.3.7(GingerDx v017) this weekend, and i am loving the features it's offering now.

Earlier i was sad and helpless as i had purchased the orphaned smartphone from SE, while other competitors with less price were having higher android version and better features.

Now i could move apps to sd card ( by default setting 🙂 ) , now planning to buy a 8gb sd card to have more data saved.

For all other helpless X8 souls, just upgrade and enjoy the great hardware SE has given us.

Hey all,

i've just had a conversation with an SE agent about  them releasing  "Gingerbread" for the X8 and i have been advised that its not possible as the device did not operate to a high standard.

Here is a copy of the Chat: The Agents name is "Louis"

Please wait while we find an agent to assist you...

You are currently in position number 1 in the queue.

You have now been connected to an agent.

Louis: Hi Robbie, thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson UK Chat Support. My name is David, how can I help you today?

Robbie: I have the Xperia X8 are there any plans from SE to release "Gingerbread" for this device?

Louis: We can advise the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 wasl tested on Android 2.3 but did not improve the handset but rather diminished it as it started to run slower and crashed frequently which will not have improved the user experience.

Louis: We have decided to keep these handsets on Android 2.1 so the handset will perform at its highest.

Robbie: So no plans for an update then?

Louis: We will continue to release system updates but unfortunately the handset will not be updated past Android 2.1.

Robbie: Would it work with just the stock Android rom without SE's customisations or is that not an option?

Louis: Sadly this would not be possible, the handset are first tested with stock Android and are then customised. The testing took place with stock Android.

Robbie: Its a shame an update is not possible, thanks for the info

Louis: Apologise for the inconvenience, Is there anything else that i can help you with?

Robbie: one more thing, i have looked at a SE blogs and users are saying that they have got "Gingerbread" on their devices and it works great, why is that? http://talk.sonyericsson.com/message/117387#117387

Louis: Other users may have installed customised version of the Gignerbread operating system on there handsets, however these ROMs do void your warranty with Sony Ericsson. The updates are not official and can more often than not contain bugs which are not possible ot be fixed. The updates we release however are fully tested before release and are very stable where as a customised software may not be.

Robbie: So it is pobbiel to get Gingerbread on the device, just that SE wont make the relevant adjustments for it to work on the same level as custom ROM's

Louis: It is possbile to put Android 2.3 onto the device as we did when testing the unit, however the handset does not operate to a higher performance level. This is why we decided to not update beyond Android 2.1.

Robbie: OK thanks for your help, no further assistance required.

Louis: No problem Robbie. I hope the information I have provided is okay. Thanks for using Sony Ericsson Chat Support today. Goodbye.
