Can someone let me know how to update my Xperia Arc (LT15) from build no. .42 to .62, step by step?
PC Companion its NOT the same as SEUS, the link above its for Update Service.
install it, restart your PC, run it, and make sure your antivirus and/or firewall are turned off
Update Service (SEUS)

You might not need to backup everything but I wouldn't risk it so
Settings -> privacy -> Back up my data and Automatic restore should be selected
and also
SMS/MMS/Call Logs
Install "backup SMS+" to back up your SMS, MMS and Call Logs to your Gmail
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync&feature=search_result
or just SMS use
"backup & restore SMS"
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&feature=search_result
or just MMS use "Save MMS"
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.schwimmer.android.mmsextract&feature=search_result
Call Logs (Just call logs)
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.yang.android.ansta
Contacts
just to play it safe sync your contacts w/ google if you haven't already
open your phonebook
press MENU button -> tap on Send Contacts -> select all -> send it to your email
on your computer
-> download the file -> go to your gmail -> click on contacts -> click on more actions -> on the drop down menu click on "import" -> choose the file -> and click import
Backup & Restore app (will backup your SMS, MMS, Call Logs, Settings, Apps, Contacts)

Try Update Service and see if it works better (like Uli said, it's not the same software).
If you don't have this option or get the same message, have a look at running processes in the PC. It's quite common that fire walls and anti virus software can block PCC, causing this problem.
Yes, the issue is resolved by update service.

I can't update, but with a different problem.
When using both the PC Companion and Update Service, both work without bugs,
but there's one problem :
They both say my phone has the latest software installed on it, which it OBVIOUSLY doesn't.
It has Android Version 2.3.3, it's the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc LT15a, and I honestly don't know what to do!
Build number 4.0.A.2.368
