This happened to me with my Xperia Ion after update to Android JB 4.1.2. No idea if it is the same issue, but this is how I solved:

1) Plug the head-phones in.

2) Power off the phone (soft-reset), leaving the head-phones plugged in.

3) Power the phone back on again.

4) When the phone has fully booted to the today screen, remove the head-phones.

I have same problem with Sony Xperia Ion LT28at AT&T,

I tried live wallpaper practice, sim card practice, earphone practice, reset, pc companion repair practice etc...

But the mic problem was not resolved.

I think all Xperia phones have this problem, despite Sony equals quality.

Please somebody from Sony should explain how we resolve this problem.

In my case IT WAS THE MIC GASKET that was blocking the pin-sized mic hole. It wasn't software. It wasn't as someone suggested a reboot with headphones in then out then what?? If you come to these forums take the time to actually READ the answers from those who have solved their problems.
That said, if I were Sony I'd be pretty embarrassed that a design flaw would cause their mics to be so easily faulted by a little gasket. And in my case after only 4 months of use.

I fixed the problem after days of frustration on all the help boards.
The microphone area is covered by rows of very small extra small holes. I thourghly cleaned the area with a small but coarse bristled brush only across, don't force through holes.
This completely solved the problem.
