Google Sky Map shows wrong directions

Hi,

I observed that Google Sky Map points in wrong directions.

The behaviour is different in landscape and portrait mode i.e. If the phone is portrait then East and West are interchanged and if landscape then North / South are interchange.

Compass application points to correct directions.

Any guess, Google Sky Map is showing version 1.6.1.

I have this problem on my Xperia mini pro too. The direction in which the compass points in Google Maps, Google Sky Maps and other apps doesn't seem to make any sense really. For example if I turn the phone just a little bit the arrow might suddenly flip over 180 degrees.

Interesting thing is that I tried Sky Maps out while in a moving car the other day, and then the compass mode seemed to work just fine. Maybe the compass needs some calibration before it starts working properly, but I can't sit down in a car and drive around for a bit each time I'd like the compass to point in the correct direction! This is one of the few issues I've had with the phone, hope it can get resolved somehow!

    Same here.

Simple compass app work correctly. Google map and skymap suffer the problem.

Direction interchanging makes these apps unusable. Please help to fix the problem.

Hmmm .. I think I am expericing a similar thing with Sky Maps. Seems ok in portrait but in landscape it rotates the wrong way when I move it no matter which way I hold the phone... course it may be just me using it wrong!

    +1 here...

Unfortunatelly, this is driving me insane when using google navigation in pedestrian mode. Skymaps is all over the place as well.

Third party compass apps work ok though...

this is interesting. I didn't notice this and you are really sharp. Off course this doesn't affects muck according to my daily usage, but i am still unable to figure out whats the real problem.

However, i am convince with your findings. since the HTCs also have the same issues, woukld you say it is a OS issue rather than a maunfacturer's issue?

I face similar problem with Google Sky Map in my Xperia mini pro. If I hold the phone in landscape mode, East and West are OK, but North and South are interchanged. Also when I move the phone the display moves in the opposite direction.

But if I hold the phone in portait mode all the directions are wrong, East and West are interchanged and North and South are interchanged. However, if I move the phone the display moves in the correct direction.

I have Compass(by Catch) and GPS status and they are perfectly showing correct direction in whatever way you hold, Landscape, Portrait, Upside down ...

you need to calibrate your phone

    You need to calibrate

    1) GPS

    2) Compass

    3) Accelerometer

You need to enter Service Menu

    This is How:

Open the Dialer and press this

    *#*#7378423#*#*

    Service Tests -> scroll down

My experience is exactly the same as yours kjerome. Other apps I've tried with compass have worked fine, the spirit level ones are a little different, this one worked fine (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.wasserwaage) this one not so good depending on mode (http://market.android.com/details?id=net.androgames.level) - when in Orientation mode (as opposed to Accelerometer which works)... it goes up and down wrong when in portrait, left and right in landscape.... same as https://market.android.com/details?id=spaceware.micro.spiritlevelce .... and https://market.android.com/details?id=com.chung.compasslevel ... the compass seems to wotrk fine on all the ones that use it though.
