Camera - xperia s - focusing problems and poor images

Firstly this phone is fantastic and I have already conmverted several friends from apple to sony.

Last night I though I would really test it out - went out with a few mates, each with different phones and every time the Nokia N8 took better pictures.

Honestly - my xperia took ages to focus and 5 out of 9 shots were very very poor. In direct comparision the N8 - once he had it set up, took photos faster and each one was in focus - non of this waiting while it figures out what its doing,.

In day light - mine wins no problem - in pubs and low light areas I found this phone to have major problems with focus, and tiime delay in pressing and actual capture of images --- dont get me wrong - I can take it out of my pocket - press the button and hey presto - a photo very very quick --but what is the point when its not in focus and then I have to try again, then again, by which time, my mates are laughing as they have unlocked their phone, aimed and took a good photo.

SONY -- please look into this --  is this my handset or systemic?

Looking at the response this is systemic - if this is a software issue then please sort it, if hardware - recall and replace.

For those of you with the problem - the best photos I can get are to disable face detection, scenes to OFF,,focus mode - have it on touch or infinity, metering centre. At least on these settings I get more than 1 out of 10 photos which I can use.

THIS IS STILL AN ISSUE!!! SONY PLEASE RESPOND!

I just think its quite sad that Sony just ignore the issue...its been months and months now...and no feedback or input at all, they should follow Nokia's leads, the day after DPReview dida review of the 808 Pureview, Damian Dinning (Nokia's head of imaging) replied to some of the questions/issues that the review had and then even answered some of the publics comments!! Sony is so diconnected from its consumers, and they wonder why profits KEEP falling!

The attached article would shed some light on why you should not compare Nokia advanced camera phones with current high end phones.   http://www.androidauthority.com/smartphone-camera-technology-analysis-88744/  For those who love to use their phone as a camera, I suggest you consider Nokia purpose made camera phone with the protruding lens. If slim and thin is most important to you, than endure some not so good shots from current phones like One X, S3, not to say XS. The Techno is still WIP but we won't get it with XS. The article did mention that Sony is developing a new camera to vastly improve picture taking and my believe is this new camera will be seen on Xperia Mint. Only thing to wish for is Sony to improve its software to enhance XS.

The problem I see with my S is that even on 12MP the pics are compressed up to the hilt. Why is there no standard, fine and superfine setting to reduce the amount of jpg compression?

Thats true, even photoshop with jpeg quality of 8 (12 is maximum) make higher size images. i think is a good idea to add that option in camera, i preffer a higher files.

Unfortunately i think Sony representatives stopped checking this thread a long long time ago, doesn't seem like they care hence the lack of updates about what is going on, if anything.

I think everyone should send an email to Sony via the contact form, i have done so multiple times but the more people that do it, the more chance there is of something happening: http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/support/contact-us/

The response will be rubbish from that contact form (i was even once told to contact the developers even though that's impossible as contact info doesn't exist for normal people, you'd think THEY would talk to the developers??!?!), but unfortunately i don't know who else we can contact in Sony. I'm hoping they have a basic logging system where they log complaints, although wouldn't be surprised if they don't since they don't seem to care.

It's a complete joke that this problem has gone on since MARCH and here we are in AUGUST and the camera is still rubbish and we don't have a clue whether they're even TRYING to fix it. Any normal person would have thought they'd include a fix with the multiple firmwares they released, but nope, Sony developers seem to have a different mindset.

The only thing more annoying than Sony providing no fix and no updates has been the handful (and i'm counting 2, at most 3), of Sony apologists who've done nothing but make excuses for Sony....GOD only knows WHY?!! We experience the problem, we want a fix...if you don't experience it, then don't keep posting in this thread, enjoy your perfect phone camera, but don't be stupid enough to claim the camera isn't a big deal for this XperiaS phone when it's clearly sold as having a great 12mp instant photo camera. Instant photo button ironically requiring you to take multiple photos until you get 1 that's in focus!

This is a smartphone that has to have a quality camera, and for some to think a camera is a minor bonus, you need to engage your brain before you make any further posts. There's a reason why people spend such large amounts of money on a SMARTphone and it's not just to make phone calls. A cheap 10 year old phone can do that.

I really don't know why Sony makes blind eyes to simple things like that, only have to change the JPEG Quality to a higher value, and i don't know why sony make a poorest phone for that...

It's my first sony mobile phone, i get a lot of problem with updates, basic programs like contacts and phone dial, and i see that sony don't care about people that uses her mobile phones. I've a Sony Tablet S, i had to wait about 2 month to get the update because i'm in spain, and when i get that update i lost some features and get some problems before update. I'm waiting to sony fix that problems and get back that features, but don't comes. Now i've a Phone and maybe i get the same problem, then maybe the next time i get another trademark devices.

I don't want to speculate whether Sony is going to provide a fix or not since smartphones cameras has yet to match pictures taken by a camera in low light. In Google Play Store there are many apps that we can download and try out. That's what great about Android. Now playing with Cam CAPTURE app. Night scene not any better than stock XS. If really need to than be sure to wait for camera to be in focus before snapping. Btw, Cam CAPTURE has burst mode.

Coments from youtube channel to this film:
*Think this is shaking more then with stabilizer OFF. Sure you havent swiched the two videos?

*The names of the videos are correct. As you mentioned, there is more shake in the video with the stabilizer ON. That's why we uploaded one with stabilizer OFF to show the difference.
