Camera - xperia s - focusing problems and poor images

Firstly this phone is fantastic and I have already conmverted several friends from apple to sony.

Last night I though I would really test it out - went out with a few mates, each with different phones and every time the Nokia N8 took better pictures.

Honestly - my xperia took ages to focus and 5 out of 9 shots were very very poor. In direct comparision the N8 - once he had it set up, took photos faster and each one was in focus - non of this waiting while it figures out what its doing,.

In day light - mine wins no problem - in pubs and low light areas I found this phone to have major problems with focus, and tiime delay in pressing and actual capture of images --- dont get me wrong - I can take it out of my pocket - press the button and hey presto - a photo very very quick --but what is the point when its not in focus and then I have to try again, then again, by which time, my mates are laughing as they have unlocked their phone, aimed and took a good photo.

SONY -- please look into this --  is this my handset or systemic?

Looking at the response this is systemic - if this is a software issue then please sort it, if hardware - recall and replace.

For those of you with the problem - the best photos I can get are to disable face detection, scenes to OFF,,focus mode - have it on touch or infinity, metering centre. At least on these settings I get more than 1 out of 10 photos which I can use.

THIS IS STILL AN ISSUE!!! SONY PLEASE RESPOND!

You need to clear the camera settings and then restart.

To clear camera settings go to Settings > Apps > All > Camera > Clear data

i also have an xperia s and i used to have this problem, after months of searching for a solution i think this link might provide you with a solution on how to fix the camera

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2009333

I installed it last week and tried taking photos during night and day time. After reviewing them on the PC i think the update is well worth it.. there are less noise on my photos right now and it focuses more quickly compared to my previous configuration.

** please don't forget to clear your camera under the settings => app then restart your fone.

Buknoii, it was posted on the previous page by djtharisha, but yes, you are right, it seems to improve the camera a big amount.

Goes to show that the camera problem always existed in the software (even though some always denied it, i bet they'll be installing this too even though they think their camera is perfect) and Sony just never bothered to fix the problem or admit the problem exists (assuming it's fixed completely, haven't been using my camera much ever since my horrible experiences with the XperiaS...ended up being too embarrassed to even try to take photos with it).

Strange thing is, this has been released by other phone users and not by Sony, so Sony STILL can't be bothered to fix the XperiaS camera. Just as well really, it's practically an obsolete model now that they and other companies have brought out so many newer models.

Also regarding the camera app porting...you do NOT need root, a normal stock phone will work, you just won't be able to get larger files size (less noise), but you get the other benefits like fast focus, focus lock etc.

did any of you had this camera focus problem during GB or ICS? or even after updating to ICS the issue still persist? because according to one of the sony staff, he/she told me latest .45 update would solve the issue, is it true?

The problem existed right from the start from GB to ICS. i installed all ICS upgrades including .45 and the latest .55 and the problem still existed (even doing clean installs, clearing cache etc); the only changes that were included were the changes Google made in their Android OS itself, nothing Sony did, at least it didn't seem like it as nothing changed.

The camera app porting posted in the XDA forums by Xperia users has made the biggest different, way bigger difference than anything Sony did or claimed to do for the Xperia S. Sad thing is, Sony themselves still haven't fixed the XperiaS camera bug, instead they improved/fixed it for their new range of cameras (so they know the problem exists), and some clever forum users simply ported that over to the XperiaS to help their fellow XperiaS users....no help from Sony.

Install the ported camera app from XDA, clear cache using info Tilden posted and restart your phone. You should notice a huge difference in terms of how much faster the camera focuses and locks on. Works on normal stock non-rooted phones (although if your phone is rooted, you should notice a quality improvement as the image file sizes will be larger due to less compression).

Today as soon as my brother opened his gmail, there was written "xmas gift, galaxy s2 camera update". My point is samsung is looking to their customer even the two years old galaxy s2. And look for our xperia S, the thread has been started about the issue related to xperia s camera from the very begining and there's no any update yet for camera fix. I'm jealous of my brother as he got the camera update as well as he will get jellybean update either last week of december or first week of the new year.

I'm wrong to choose sony phones.:smileysad:
