Camera - xperia s - focusing problems and poor images

Firstly this phone is fantastic and I have already conmverted several friends from apple to sony.

Last night I though I would really test it out - went out with a few mates, each with different phones and every time the Nokia N8 took better pictures.

Honestly - my xperia took ages to focus and 5 out of 9 shots were very very poor. In direct comparision the N8 - once he had it set up, took photos faster and each one was in focus - non of this waiting while it figures out what its doing,.

In day light - mine wins no problem - in pubs and low light areas I found this phone to have major problems with focus, and tiime delay in pressing and actual capture of images --- dont get me wrong - I can take it out of my pocket - press the button and hey presto - a photo very very quick --but what is the point when its not in focus and then I have to try again, then again, by which time, my mates are laughing as they have unlocked their phone, aimed and took a good photo.

SONY -- please look into this --  is this my handset or systemic?

Looking at the response this is systemic - if this is a software issue then please sort it, if hardware - recall and replace.

For those of you with the problem - the best photos I can get are to disable face detection, scenes to OFF,,focus mode - have it on touch or infinity, metering centre. At least on these settings I get more than 1 out of 10 photos which I can use.

THIS IS STILL AN ISSUE!!! SONY PLEASE RESPOND!

Every phone has it's unique irks and Samsung Note is not without flaws. Widely reported is the recent discovery that Galaxy Note video playback has issue as well as other screen problems experienced by owners. The best is this according to GSMArena: "We are yet to see an official word from Samsung on the matter as well as information on a potential fix." Seems like this is the mode of communication for most manufactuer today. Crying_Face

There many people who dont know how to use camera functions which is not helped by the focus lag in xperia s ... i think .453 update to ICS almost fixed this n now focusing fast... BUT IMAGE COMPRESSION STILL AS IN GB.... From the size i'm getting i presume sony using JPG100 compression to get 2.5-4MB filesize where RAW12 image will be 18MB, RAW10 - 15MB n RAW8 - 12MB etc.... Dont We deserve a RAW image of our photos.... WHY CANT THEY ADD An OPTION TO SAVE AS RAW.... DAMN IT

Hello Xperian,

You have mentioned .453 update, but am not sure if this update is rolled out. I am still with .452 and i don't see an update in my mobile from Sony.

Thanks

Why always we have to have some problems...  i had have hope that xperia S will WIN with the SGS2 (1,5 year old!) and... 12mpix but quality and all camera focus speed is much worst... if i will pay about 90$ more than i will get SGS3! and 4 cores and 8mpix really good image quality... is any way to do better picture by xperia s or i need to sell it>?

you are missing the point uli, there are a great number of people with the SAME issues, low light IQ, low light focussing etc. Sony should address these, but they seem intent on ignoring consumers, which is fine, their financial decline will continue because THEY DON"T GIVE A DAMN when consumers (people spending the money) raise valid issues with their products...just release a camera ICS patch and voila, happy consumers = they will buy Sony again, me I wont, this is teh 2nd time I bought a Sony (Sony/ERicsson) handset with issues and Sony NEVER addressed the issue (raised by hundreds of people), that was a few years ago, so I thought I'd give the new 'Sony' a try again, but from what I see the problem is still very much there... they don't care! Unlike Nokia, when people raised the issue of focussing etc with the N8 Nokia very quickly brought out a camera patch to address the issue and add better functionality = happy consumers. pity the Sony cams dont use Xenon flash, low light IQ on the N8 is in a whol eseperate league to LED cams....

today i compared my xperia S 1080p recording with friend xperia P... its crazy... because in my recording it looks like my hand will sheaking a lot and in xperia P i dont see this issue. In both recordings i tryed be reallly carefoully.

Secondly, ok when i was recording by Xperia S something what was close than it was better than xperia P but when i recording  the street and cars, than in video quality won xperia P because wasnt shacking so much and was more sharp(i sow better details) and i think that happend because was BETTER FOCUSING and that is the first problem i think FOCUSING the large areas. Because if something was about 1 meters from me or closer than xperia S was better than xperia P. Now i think it is software/firmware problem ( I HAVE HOPE) because in other way that would be the hardware problem.

Sony pleace cheack this.

good example, but it's not the same, how come? well besides the obvious (landscape/portrait) you are closer on the first and you can see the use of flash on the first one, also the background light and many many other factors, you can't compare them unless you take them exactly under the same conditions, settings angle, position.
