Unknown USB Device (Device descriptor request failed)

Phone no longer wants to connect to a PC (Windows 10) via USB.

Windows Device Manager shows the phone as "Unknown USB Device (Device descriptor request failed)" and the phone does not provide an option to select - charging only, usb file transfer or that third option (MTP).

The Phone does appear to charge via PC USB & normal wall socket genuine charger.
Also, as the battery icon changes to charging - a solid orange led is lit while doing so. But I'm not longer receiving the notification on whether I want to connect my device in File Transfer mode.

Phone has the Android 7.0 update - 32.3.A.0.372

Any help/advice?
PS: Xperia Companion does not detect the phone and cannot be used for a software repair.
UPDATE:
Thanks NeoBeum for the proposed patches to my particular issue.
In summary:
  • Disable "USB selective suspend setting" under "Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings" in the Advanced Settings.
  • Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option in Device Manager for the "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

I can confirm that in my case the Xperia Z5 connects to the PC, charges from it and displays the popup "Use USB to - charge, transfer or MIDI". I can also confirm that I can debug applications from Visual Studio directly on the device.

However, I do not accept this as a solution as the windows related power settings should not affect the performance and connectivity of the Xperia Z5. These problems do not persist on other tested platforms/devices (Google Pixel, Samsung S5, Apple iPhone) connecting to the exact same computer.

I will try another Xperia Z5 Compact device to try replicate these issues.

Hello!
I had the same problem, except that the phone did not charge via PC USB. I got advise from support to open Settings and then Apps and in the top right corner tap the three dots and tap "Show system" ("Visa system" in Swedish). Then scroll down alphabetically (long way!) to USB connection and tap it. Then tap "Storage" and finally tap "clean data" (rensa data). Then you have to restart the phone.

After restarting the phone it will connect to PC via USB, it will charge normally, you get the question about connection mode and it is possible to use Xperia Companion.

Unfortunately I have had to do all of that almost every time I connect the phone to a PC. Though it is nice to know that there must be some software issue, not a hardware failure, I would like to have a more permanent solution.

Anyone who has an idea?

I have a Xperia Z5 compact with the latest updates via Xperia Companion (Android 6.0.1 32.2.A.5.11), a PC running Win10 pro

Enable Developer Options, and goto USB Configuration, and select MTP.
You'll find the option under Networking.

I have already tried that, and it didn't change anything.

To tell some of the story from the beginning, I contacted support and they gave some tips how to fix the problem, among them that operation. Then, after some more tries, we gave up, and it was decided to send the unit for reparation. Before I sent it I made two manual backups -to "the cloud" and to the SD-card. Then I tried just one last time before putting it in a box and sending it, to connect to a PC. And it worked as it should after these backups! I realised it must be a software issue and cancelled the repair. But the problem reappeared rather quickly. I contacted support again and got the tip about cleaning the USB-storage. It must be something -perhaps some app- that keeps messing up something with the USB settings when the phone is on.

Open up device manager in Windows, and take a screenshot of what ever has the exclamation mark

The PC doesn't detect that the phone is connected via USB cable. It doesn't show in the device manager, there are no exclamation marks. But some days ago I could see the phone as an "unknown USB unit" in the device manager at some instance. When I have made that cleaning procedure the phone is visible as a portable unit (bärbara enheter).

My bad, in the menu bar, go to the options and select View>>Show hidden

For Windows 10, these are the drivers that should be loaded for MTP to work

MTP00.PNG

If one of those are missing, check to see what it says here:

MTP01.PNG

The Phone should appear in Portable Devices, like you mentioned.

It should not appear in USB controllers... here is an example of me connecting the phone as MIDI.

To check to see if something is the correct device, Look at: Bus reported description, it should say the Model Number for your phone

Problem devices will appear in the "Other devices", here you can see the services for the Z5C and also a Samsung Galaxy that Windows knows about, but can't find a driver for.
If Windows doesn't know what it is - this is where the Exclamation mark will be

Hidden Devices/Crap thats been unplugged, will appear as the translucent devices

Yes, when Show hidden is active I can see translucent icons for not presently attatched devises -strangely enough 3 instances of my phone under portable devices - and that unknown USB unit under USB controllers (Properties: The USB device returned an invalid USB device descriptor). The device manager doesn't consider any of them attatched.

So the computer must se the phone as not attatched.

I'm sorry, but I can't see any of the png pictures you put out neither in Edge, Explorer, Firefox nor Chrome.
