Unknown USB Device (Device descriptor request failed)

Phone no longer wants to connect to a PC (Windows 10) via USB.

Windows Device Manager shows the phone as "Unknown USB Device (Device descriptor request failed)" and the phone does not provide an option to select - charging only, usb file transfer or that third option (MTP).

The Phone does appear to charge via PC USB & normal wall socket genuine charger.
Also, as the battery icon changes to charging - a solid orange led is lit while doing so. But I'm not longer receiving the notification on whether I want to connect my device in File Transfer mode.

Phone has the Android 7.0 update - 32.3.A.0.372

Any help/advice?
PS: Xperia Companion does not detect the phone and cannot be used for a software repair.
UPDATE:
Thanks NeoBeum for the proposed patches to my particular issue.
In summary:
  • Disable "USB selective suspend setting" under "Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings" in the Advanced Settings.
  • Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option in Device Manager for the "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

I can confirm that in my case the Xperia Z5 connects to the PC, charges from it and displays the popup "Use USB to - charge, transfer or MIDI". I can also confirm that I can debug applications from Visual Studio directly on the device.

However, I do not accept this as a solution as the windows related power settings should not affect the performance and connectivity of the Xperia Z5. These problems do not persist on other tested platforms/devices (Google Pixel, Samsung S5, Apple iPhone) connecting to the exact same computer.

I will try another Xperia Z5 Compact device to try replicate these issues.

Take a screen shot of the device manager with portable and usb sections expanded.. My pictures should be approved now use the last one for a guide.

Have you ever used Regedit?

In the meantime, go to each of the instances of the device in portable and usb, and check the properties, and can you tell me the date and time for the 'First Installation'

CTRL+C works or right click the timestamp and copy and paste it in to your reply.

This will let us know which mode is being shown to the PC first, and then a failure time, or maybe a mode that caused it

It's a Z5 device E6653 and O/S is Win10.

The issue is that the device no longer pops up with the option to select the USB mode (charging, MTP or whatever) and in the windows device manager it appears as a "Unknown USB Device (device descriptor request failed)".

I am also experiencing slow charging (original charger or other charger) and quite a few crashes/restarts lately too.

I have also noticed that battery use has gone up too.  It is a bit strange as I've been running the Android 7 update since Dec and it has been going good until last week.

I have a feeling that in my case the device may need to go back under warranty.

As you see on the screenshots there are three Xperia Z5 under portable units, they are from the same phone. The first two screenshots are taken with the phone attatched via USB, but it isn't recognized by the computer.

First upper part:

Then the lower part (I have a small screen):

Skärmklipp2.PNG

The screenshot below is taken after the maneuvre with cleaning USB storage and restarting phone, this time I had to restart it twice. Interestingly, there is a USB unit that has exactly the same time for installation as the phone.

Skärmklipp 3.PNG

I first installed the phone (after it was repaired) dec 21 2016.

These has to do with the phone, I think:

USB mass storage 2017-01-31 18:04:58

USB unit 2017-01-31 18:04:58

USB unit 2017-01-30 23:56:38

I hope you can make something out of this!

@NeoBeum,

Thanks for the tip about USB configuration + MTP.

I have had some success (luck) but I'm not sure if this was due to any of the following reasons:

  1. Enable Developer Options, and goto USB Configuration, and select MTP (even though it was selected) - maybe the toggle between charge and MTP did the trick.
  2. Maybe an application was causing the issue which may have gotten updated over the weekend

I'd bank more toward 1. but to be honest it just doesn't make sense to me at all.

I know W10 is tempramental but I haven't had issues previously to Android 7 update.  At least not like this.

On the weekend, the phone was totally lagging in camera mode and it crashed. Also the red battery led turned on and the phone shut off.

UPDATE: Spoke too soon!

Turning off the device's ability to Install Xperia/PC Companion might help too.

One of those USB Devices will be that mode because windows sees it as a disk

@Lasch the MTP driver was installed by Microsoft, so Windows has recognized the phone, and the internal driver identifiers for your Z5C aren't corrupted.

As I said to temelj, disable the Z5Cs ability to install, Xperia Companion.

Before you plug the phone back in to the PC, right click each device related to the phone and remove/delete. Del button works too.

RESTART PC.
Check devmgmt to make sure the devices are gone.

Once you're ready with Dev Options On with Forced MTP, and PCC/XC Install partition disabled, plug the phone back in.

Then lets see what device installs

Edit: the XC-PCC setting is in Settings,  Device connection, USB config

Under Android 7.0 update, that seems to be the default setting (disable device pc companion install)

.@temelj be sure windows isnt doing any thing funky when you plug the phone in to USB3.0 SS or powered charge slots. You'll know because you'll hear the W10 chimes connect, disconnect connect, disconnect USB.

Its connected to a standard USB 2 port - I have tried USB 3 SS ports too.

Thing is, it worked fine up until last week.  I have had the odd - unplug/plug in to get MTP accepted but at least it was connecting.
