To create a .nomedia file i recommend that you use an app in the phone to do this. If you search for ".nomedia" in Google Play you'll find some apps that creates this file for you in the folder(s) you select. You could also download a file manager like Astro File Manager and create it manually.
You may not be able to create this file using a computer as some operating systems (like Windows) can't create a file called only ".somthing".
@aMUSEd - Have you checked the link provided by Uliwooly? This contains a method that will work to filter such content from the Album application.

You will need to have the .nomedia file in each folder you wish to exclude this includes all sub folders.

Ive tried creating these files in various folders using a PC and an app from the Google Play however it seems that the Sony Album app ignores them. Despite the file existing in the appropriate places, the images contained in these folders are still displayed in the Gallery App.
