Try clearing data for the app called "Media Storage" under Settings -> Apps -> All and then restart your phone. This will make the phone rescan all files.

Please be aware that if the folder is not a user created/managed folder such as a folder created by a messaging application like Whatsapp then the data will likely keep coming back.

Why is this?  I'm finding that even though certain folders are hidden view the .nomedia method, any now media added to these folders still appears in the gallery unless i clear the data in the apps menu (as described above) and then reboot.  It's very annoying ... this is supposed to be a flagsghip device!

See #29 on this link: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24162. It seems it has to do with the app in question requesting the media scanner to scan the specific file. It will then do that even if there's a .nomedia file in that folder.

I don't quite understand it.. Is it possibly yes or no to hide pictures? If yes how i do this? I dont want to download unreliable apps to do this..I have some xxx pictures in my album and don't want anyone else to see...

You can hide them as below, however this is only for files you have added yourself. Any folders tied to an application such as Whatsapp etc will refresh the data and show them again:

To prevent non-music files from appearing in the music player, you need to create an empty file called “.nomedia” or “.nomusic” and place it in the folder containing the unwanted audio files.

To create and save an empty file

Use a text editor application on your computer, e.g. Notepad. Make sure to set Save as type to All files instead of Text document. Name the file “.nomedia” or “.nomusic”.

Connect the phone to the computer using a USB cable. Copy the empty file to the folder or folders that contains the unwanted audio files. Disconnect the phone and restart it.
