XZ2 apps to sd card

On the new Xperia xz2 can you move apps from phone storage to external sd card?

Hello everyone!

In regards to why this feature is no longer available, please see the information below.

Google stopped providing the possibility to move apps to an SD card to secure the security and the privacy in Android 6. This feature was removed from Android, but we continued to support it further for some time. However, we decided not to keep our solution to move apps to an SD card for users security and privacy.

I hope that answers your question!

As i know in Oreo is impossibe to move apps to SD card at all. So i think NO, you can't transfer app to SD card Slightly_smiling_Face

Hi @alinco02, welcome to our forum!

I have received some more information regarding your question and I'm afraid that the Xperia XZ2 does not support moving applications to an SD card.

You can however still save data to the SD card from certain application, such as offline play lists, offline maps and so forth. Do note that this varies from application to application!

@EUPHORIC, You can still move applications to the SD card in Oreo on devices that supported this feature in Android 7, such as the Xperia XZ.

@Jonas, /t5/Xperia-XZ1/Move-app-to-Sd-Card/td-p/1266969#gref - well i don't have device with Oreo (which by the way is Android 8 :)), but as you can see, some users saying that option is disabled, that's why i wrote that. Thanks for correction Slightly_smiling_Face

So in Oreo is possible to move apps which is movable in memory card? Maybe is the same way how is in Marshmallow, where is need to move every app personally (in oldest Android systems was possble to move all together, wasn't separated)? Slightly_smiling_Face

Hi @EUPHORIC, sorry for the late reply!

In those devices that supported moving applications to the SD card in Android 7.0 you can still move applications to the SD card even in Android 8.0, for example Xperia XZ.

You need to move them one by one to the SD card and you are correct, previously there was an option when you tapped "Transfer data to SD card" called "Apps/Applications" that moved all of them at once!

I hope that explains it about further! Slightly_smiling_Face

It's ok for late replay. Thank you, Jonas, for information and explain at all. I understand now what you mean, but a little correct. All apps was and is possible to transfer together in Lollipop 5.0 and 5.1, one by one possible to transfer from Marshmallow (Android 6.0). That's why i asked you, coz you mentioned only Android 7, so was little not clear for me, coz i have Sony Xperia only with Marshmallow. About Oreo as i posted was some users opinion and information which i posted. But i hope it's clear enough for all Sony's costumers right now Slightly_smiling_Face

Unfortunately, other than my XZ1 does, apps like Here Maps or Pons dictionaries don't see the SD and therefore put even all the data content in the main memory!

I see a continuous "degrade" of SD usability on my last Sony phones (X, XZ, XZ1, XZ2): The newer the phone, the less you can put on the SD. The XZ2 is currently the end of the road since it looks like apps cannot place anything which belongs to the app on the SD. Everything goes right on the mein memory. It cannot get worser than this! In times where micro SD cards have 512 GB, better and expensive phones still have 64 GB only! It's "better" memory, agreed, but anyway, the difference in capacity is way too big!

I have the experia xz2 which appears to be unable to move apps from the device to an sd card which will undoubtedly cause a severe reduction on the life of the phone. Will there be an update in the future to change this? Thanks

I'm pretty sure that there won't be an update to move apps to the SD card because it doesn't make any sense. Apps would launch slower and be more unstable. The best place for apps is and has always been the internal storage.

How this reduces the life of the phone is beyond me.
