Similar situation here.. I have an xperia Arc in the UK which is not locked to a network (1246-9197).
I think I will contact Sony too (for what it's worth!)
Here is the reply I got from SONY.
Dear ###,
Thank you for contacting the Sony Xperia support centre.
We are sorry to hear you are experiencing problems with the performance of your Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S since updating to Android 4.0.
We can advise the Android 4.0 software is more intensive in terms of resource usage. Both our own applications and the Google Mobile Services (GMS) applications are becoming more advanced which means; they require more CPU power, run more network activities and use more RAM. This means the performance of the handset may decrease compared to how it was when on Android 2.3.
This information was posted on our Blog before the release of Android 4.0 to allow our users to decide whether or not they would like to update their handsets. Please follow the link below to view this information:
We would suggest ensuring that you save all downloaded applications to the SD card as this will clear up the handsets internal memory and provide more space for the Android system to run correctly. This can be performed by following the steps below:
1. Open the Menu
2. Select Settings
3. Go into Applications > Manage Applications
4. Tap the “Downloaded” tab
5. Select each application and then tap “Move to SD card”
Please note: It may not be possible to move all downloaded applications to the memory card as this will entirely depend on the way each application has been developed. This is not something Sony Xperia has control over.
If you are not satisfied with the Android 4.0 software and wish to return it to Android 2.3 then please respond to this Email with the country your handset was purchased in so we can provide you with the appropriate details of your nearest service centre.
For the latest news, information and product support please visit www.sonymobile.com.
If you require any further assistance then please do not hesitate to respond to this email or call our customer support on 08705 237 237. Should you choose to contact us via an alternative channel, one of our agents will request a unique field from you and would suggest providing your Email address.
Please be aware that should you not respond within 5 days of this email your query will be automatically closed. Any further communications will not reach our support and a new query will need to be raised.
Kind Regards,
Sony Xperia UK Customer Services
They say about ics being more intensive on resources. BUT DO NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION AS TO WHY 4.0.4 is NOT released yet
no words to describe the situation...seems like... 4.0.3 is the last we will see on the UK sim free Arc S.
here is my conversation with the chat support staff...
----------------------------------------
support staff: The rollout of the ICS update is a gradual process, we would not be able to say when a specific SI number would get the update
###: yes I have heard that many times. But it seems like its been rolled out everywhere and UK has been left out
###: how gradual do u mean.. an year?
support staff: The rollout in the UK is underway
###: since when?
support staff: The rollout began at the end of June
###: for 4.0.3 or 4.0.4?
support staff: That varies depending on the network etc
###: really? a sim free phone? depending on network?
support staff: If PC Companion states that your phone is up to date then there is no update available for the phone
###: I do know the uk sim free was given 4.0.3 which is not great in performance or battery life.. so Sony started the roll out of 4.0.4
###: And as I have said if there is no update available for your phone at the moment then there is no further information I could give you in regards to when you will get the update
Well Sony have replied giving me the same "We warned you android 4 may not be as fast" line as they used last time and offered to revert the phone to 2.3.4 if I mail it to them in a jiffy bag.. With the back removed... and the charger and cable loose in the bag... And mentioned that there might be a "fee" for some repairs.
My response is quite obviously to now approach my original retailer to get them to sort it out on the warranty for free or give me my money back. tbh from their reaction when I talked the problem over when the sales rep... I aint the first. His sigh of resignation and "You upgrade it to ICS?" said it all.
Just wish I could get something other than a cut and paste reply from Sony making me sound like its running a bit slower and as a result I am throwing my toys from the pram.
It crashes Sony. It wont take phone calls when it reboots or sits in my pocket crashed with no outward sign other than it getting hot and draining the battery flat.
I think my next phone will be a simple affair which takes phonecalls. I already failed to get a phone call informing me a member of my extended family had sadly passed away unexpectedly and had to find out via email.
Perhaps integrating our mobile internet comms and phone into one complex package might be a very dangerous plan. There should be a warning on the 4.0.3 upgrade. "This might make your phone unusable and there is no facility to roll it back to 2.3.4 yourself."
This is all very stressful. Pesky thing is only 6 months old.
Surely someone must be reading this topic and noticed that it's now 5 pages long!
I wish I'd never "upgraded" to ICS, my phone was a joy to use on GB now everything is an effort.
I was going to try and root and install a working version of ICS but I'd probably balls it up
...so I'll just probably sell this phone and get a Samsung or something similar
I know I can downgrade but i don't want to flash my phone, I've owned it for 8 months and for about 4 months of those I've used it for calls and texts only, I feel well and truly ripped off
I flashed my sister's Arc S to a custom ROM though not perfect it fixes a lot of freezes etc. Then I flashed my Galaxy S to ICS (Samsung has abandoned it) and it's never been faster/smoother. SONY needs to do better.
Hey guys, after more than two very long months checking the page every day to see if my SI was listed there (1254-1957), I was suprised to see that finally it's there and no I wasn't dreaming, so like any other good lad I backed up my phone, connected it to the pc and opened PC Companion, at this point I was back at the starting point, "You phone software is up to date"!
I was begining to worry that maybe they did a good job this time, but no they kept up to my expectations... This was yesterday today I still get the same message...
The SI number is listed, but the phone wich is on 4.0.3 is up to date WTF?
