Warning - ICS Update Broke Hotspot and USB Tether

ST18a updated this afternoon to the second release of ICS (was using first release previous to this).

USB Tethering and Wi-Fi Hotspot are no longer working.  I can connect and get an IP address but no internet access.

This is real bad since this is a primary use for my phone.

UPDATE: Confirmed same behavior with a second laptop ... I can connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot on my phone but no internet access.

UPDATE: iPad via Wi-Fi Hotspot, same thing, gets IP address but no internet access.

Hello,

changing APN settings solved the problem on Xpeira T (Europe Croatia/VIP).

Just erase APN settings and creat a new one using your operators settings.

In my case Hotspot and USB Tether works now.

Good luck! Winking_Face

Goodbye Sony, hello Samsung! Got rid of the Xperia Mini Pro last week and got a new Samsung Rugby Pro DIRECTLY through AT&T versus the Xperia was an unlocked phone I purchased through Amazon. Nothing in my plan has changed, the default on the Rugby won't let me tether because I didn't sign up for the plan but once I downloaded a third party app, it worked just fine. But still nothing on the Xperia. To SONY, STOP WITH THE BS ABOUT THE CARRIER'S FAULT! Why can't you just own up to your mistake and fix it instead of pointing the finger to someone else. I will miss the slide out keyboard but that is all I will miss. Good luck to the rest of you who are still having issues with your phones.

I have an Xperia arc LT15i. Exactly the same problem as everyone else. Upgraded to ICS wiped out my tethering. Worked perfectly well with 2.34 build 4.02A.0.42. I am in Australia on the OPTUS network. I contacted them and had them check all myt settings and reset them. Did not solve the problem. Had to send my phone back to the supplier and have it rolled back to 2.34. Did not have the phone for 2 weeks. Your advice that it is the settings of the provider wrong. It is the software update. This feature is very important to me and Sony should do more to solve the problem. I used my sim card in my wifes Samsung galaxy Y and tethering worked fine.

Wont be buying a Sony phone again and advise others to do the same.

Hi just wondering if there might be a fix found for the the tethering and wifi hotspot issue for xperia ion lt28i? As soon as I check wifi hotspot, a little box pops up on my phone that says "a network error has occurred". As well, I notice when setting up the connection on my ps3, the ps3 can obtain the ip address, but connection to the Internet fails. USB tethering and Bluetooth fail as well!! My boyfriend's LG running Gingerbread can work on my ps3,but for crying out loud my high end superphone running ICS cannot! It worked before the update to ICS! So, anyone find anything for this? I'm scared to upgrade to JB without it being fixed first. Thanks so much for your help in advance Slightly_smiling_Face

Hi:

I didn't read the whole thread, so I hope this is not a re post.

I have found a partial solution for this problem, al least in my case works!

My phone is the Xperia Neo V (MT11a) upgraded to ICS 4.0.4. Like others users commented I can't enable the USB tethering. I'm not sure since when, but I soppose since the upgrade to 4.0.4

I read in an old post this issue could be related to APN condiguration, I change two APN parameters and now it works!

I'm from Argentina and my company is Personal. In APN configuration I found: "APN type: default, supl, a-gps" and "Authentication type: PAP" I replace this by: "APN type: default" and "Authentication type: none", and Save. Then I choose Aireplane mode on, and then off for reconnection.

After this changes I'm able to use the USB tethering with my phone conected to internet by 3G. I shared the connection with a PC running Ubuntu Linux. I change this parameters after consult my operator's web page (http://www.personal.com.ar/internetmovil/servicios/mejora_tu_navegacion.html)

After a few tests, I think that the PAP authentication is what causes the problem.

I hope this can help you! An sorry for my english :S

Bye!

"The T-Mobile APN seems to be the designated Tethering APN, you need another APN for non-tethering activities.

You'd need to create a AT&T APN with wap.cingular , then change the T-Mobile APN also to wap.cingular , and delete all the proxy and mms info.

Do not delete "APN type: dun" in the T-Mobile setting, or else your APN setting privilage will be disabled until factory reset."

In my case, I simply set APN Type to "dun" for the T-Mobile, and cleared the APN Type from the AT&T APN config. My guess is that this could work if you just overwrite the T-Mobile APN for your carrier instead of creating a new one.

Actual post with fix is post #56 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27277483

I found this fix from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1694741

Thank you!  I am also on AT&T (US).  Of all the solutions listed on this thread, this one makes the most sense.  I didn't understand what you meant at first.  My Xperia Mini Pro sk17a has no T-Mobile APN.

Based on reading this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2429456, it's all about the meaning of APN type.  "dun" is for "dial-up networking," and it can coexist with other default data connections.  That's why some users have said you need to keep the "T-Mobile" one, including dun, and also add another new APN.

Search on Google "dun" and APN and you will see how it works.

As for what I'll try, I'm going to set up two APNs, one that I'm using, and one that is "dun" with all the MMS info deleted.  Actually, this solution is on Page 16 of this thread: http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Software-Updates/Warning-ICS-Update-Broke-Hotspot-and-USB-Tether/td-p/..., the post at 2012-08-30 04:32 PM

Trying to bump this up.

Anybody found any solution? Same problem here as everybody else: Tethering worked with JB, broken with ICS on sk17i with 4.1.B.0.587, using the same SIM card and APN settings still works in other Android phones.

One more datapoint: Tethering seems to work initially, but the wifi get's shut of (I assume the driver crashes) and can only be restarted by rebooting the mobile (that I know of).

Therefore certainly nothing to do with APN settings.

So, as I still love my sk17i (even though my motorola droid 4 is insanely more capable, it is also unfortunately bigger), I would really like to see this fixed

Thanks,

Sven

PS: I know that going to cyanogen would solve this issue, but I rather like the SONY interface...

Is there a fix yet?

U.K. Three network, Sony Z2.
Same happening here.
I updated software to lollipop a couple of weeks back and was totally miffed that I could no longer use my phone as a hotspot. I could connect my tablet and laptop to it, but no Internet access.
My kids told me on Tuesday that there's a second update available.
I thought, great, they've sorted it.
Updated, still no good.
I am now using my old phone (xperia T) as a hotspot for my tablet / laptop and can't cancel the contract for it until this is sorted.
So at the moment I'm paying over £80 / month to run two phones.
All because they've buggered up my Z2!!!!!!!!!!!
