Warning - ICS Update Broke Hotspot and USB Tether

ST18a updated this afternoon to the second release of ICS (was using first release previous to this).

USB Tethering and Wi-Fi Hotspot are no longer working.  I can connect and get an IP address but no internet access.

This is real bad since this is a primary use for my phone.

UPDATE: Confirmed same behavior with a second laptop ... I can connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot on my phone but no internet access.

UPDATE: iPad via Wi-Fi Hotspot, same thing, gets IP address but no internet access.

Just for information : downgrading to Android 4.0.3 did not solve the issue.

THANK YOU iaselle and Dacianus for jumping in on this.

Now the decision... Do I rollback myself to Gingerbread (void warranty) or send it in to a service center.

If either of you try Gingerbread please post results.

I have successfully downgraded to Gingerbread using this post.

The process was straightforward.

I rollbacked to 4.0.2.A.0.42  version  (since I wanted to have my devise rooted --as long as the warranty is void-- ! )  and tethering worked !

Back to 4.0.2.A.0.62 as prompted by the phone, tethering still worked  (both through wifi and usb).

I used MyphoneExplorer (desktop application + android client available on google play) in order to backup/restore my contacts.

This lightweight  application allows you to browse the content of your phone and is very useful for sending SMS trough the keyboard of your computer.

What irritates me is I called the Sony Service Center and they will re-flash me to Gingerbread, but I have to pay shipping.

Sure that's not much ... but hey they SCREWED UP royal on ICS.  Most companies would RUSH overnight you a return box, with overnight shipping back to them.  Why is Sony not so considerate of their customers?

So I'll probably be without my phone for a week or more.

Johan,

You should review this thread.  Two other customers have  confirmed loss of hotspot and tethering with the ICS update.

sparkyblaster,

Thanks for jumping in on this with your report confirming the problem.  Everyone is bitching about the SMS LED notification problem and that is peanuts compared to this.

I sent my phone to Sony yesterday to get flashed back to Gingerbread.  I can't take the loss of these features.  I would have done it myself but my warranty is still good until Nov 2012.
