Volume down Button in update to ICS

I know this has been discussed before.. but I haven't found a solution to my problem.

On the phone (Update Center) it says there is an update 6.1.A.0.452 and a "PC Companion required" and at the bottom it says "You can only use a computer to update your phone"

My attempts to update:

  1. Using the website on both PC or Mac does not work (however they both recognize I need an update), and asks me to use the PC companion when using a PC or Bridge for Mac when I used my Mac.
  2. Bridge for Mac does not recognise I need an update at all and says "Your phone software is up to date". B4MAC.jpg
  3. On the PC and using the PC Companion, the phone is quickly recognized by the computer, and asked if I want to start the update process. The whole thing goes smoothly until I get to the point where I'm asked to Press and hold the volume down button while plugging in the USB to the phone. After tons of various attempts, it never succeeded to work. I tried pressing enter on the keyboard, which moves to the next step of the process but nothing actually happens.
  4. I then tried using Sony Update Service, but unfortunately, I got stuck at the same point in the update as the PC Companion (the holding down the volume button while plugging in the USB into the phone bit)

I don't know what else to do at this point. I have emailed Sony costumer service but haven't got a reply yet. Please if anyone has any idea how to fix this of is there any other way to this other than the one I listed please let me know. Or if there is a way to prepare the phone for the update other then using the volume button method ?

Here's some extra info on the device.

It sounds like you're doing it the right way.

Make sure to press and hold the volume down button before plugging in the USB cable. Also, you should not let go of the button until you're told to do so. These are a pretty common faults.

Can you confirm that you've done all this?

Do you have the phone turned off before you hold the volume down button and then plug in the USB cable??
