Video player rotation

Is there a reason why I can't watch videos in portrait mode with the stock player? It rotates automatically, but skips portrait mode and means that videos recorded in said mode have huge black bars either side and are basically zoomed out. Portrait-recorded videos are not ideal, but the option to view them in that mode would be helpful. Seems a bit weird to ignore device rotation somewhat.

there are other threads on the topic, Sony's video player had this option before, you can use another vidwo player, mobo player

I'm aware that other video players exist and I have VLC. The stock player should be capable of playing in portrait mode, or else it isn't respecting the device's rotation fully. It's not much to ask. Is this a new Android default behaviour or a Sony idea? The other posts I've seen about this don't contain proper answers, just dismissive comments about other video players existing.

Hi mate. I posted about this as well. Been doing my head in! Before the latest android update the camera was fine and when you took videos in portrait mode they would play in the same fashion. Not any more. Sony have made a mistake and need to rectify in the next update if there is to be one!

Got to agree that this situation is a disgrace. How anyone at Sony could sign this one
off and think that it is acceptable is beyond me!

The new flavours of the Xperia line up do not have this “bug”, although Sony will tell
you it is working as designed! It is strange why other manufactures do not have
this “issue” when taking portrait mode videos.

All this on a handset that was presented as “your greatest moments in full HD” and “HD
beauty in your phone and beyond, your greatest moments, from life to phone to
big screen, in beautifully vivid detail.

What they should be saying is don’t take a video in portrait mode, unless you want a
postage stamp size micro video a la 2005!
