The 'Sleep' vs. 'Lock Screen' issue

So here's another one on the Xperia SL.

Am using the Slide pattern to unlock the phone.
If you go to 'Settings' and 'Display'  you can choose the 'Sleep' mode. You have to choose between the options, there is no 'none'. So your phone goes off to sleep say after 15 secs of inactivity.

Then under Settings you have 'Security' and you can choose to 'Automatically Lock' your phone immediately after the 'Sleep' activity. There's no option here for 'None' either.

Question 1: If my phone goes to sleep does it not mean that it's locked and I have to power it on? If yes, then what's the point of the Auto Lock mode?
Question 2: How does a 'locked' screen look incidentally? Because on my phone all I have is a black screen when it goes to sleep. I don't have an option for never remember?
Question 3: If the phone does get locked, then why have the 'Change wallpaper in Lock' settings when all I can see is a black screen when my phone goes off to sleep and there's no change in any wallpaper?
Question 4: If there's an option of lock screen and wall paper settings, I'm presuming it must be only when you choose a pin or password optiongic

Anyway, developers don't use logic sometimes.

Just checked the Lock Screen using the Slide option. Am able to set the wallpaper and it does change. Whoa! However....
the screen does go blank after a period of inactivity which you can set by going to the Settings>> Display>> Sleep activity.

It sounds like you want configure the phone so that the display is turned on all the time? That's not possible unless you have a charger connected.

Sleep mode means that the phone turns off the display and goes to an energy saving mode.
Lock screen means that you have to unlock the screen (for example with PIN or password) after you have turned on the display after sleep mode.

To answer your questions:

1. Sleep mode doesn't necessarily mean that the screen lock is enabled. It depends on what you select under Settings -> Security -> Screen lock/Automatically lock.

Sleep mode means that the phone turns off the display and goes to an energy saving mode.

2. A locked screen will display the picture you've selected under Settings -> Display -> Lock screen settings and the lock you've selected under Settings -> Security -> Screen lock.

3. I think you are confusing sleep mode and lock screen. Sleep mode means a black screen (display turned off). Lock screen means that you have you unlock the phone using for example a PIN or password after you turn on the display.

4. The lock wall paper will be display on the lock screen as long as you don't select none under Settings -> Security (in that case you don't have any lock screen).

I understand what you're saying Mr. Rickard. And that's my query - sleep vs. lock. Even if the screen's locked it will go into the 'black screen' mode. So also in 'Sleep'. Like you said that the sleep doesn't necessarily mean locked. Well no issues...the Change wallpaper works only if your security settings are for Slide or perhaps Pin and Password (not tried the last 2). For Pattern it sure doesn't work.

Thanks for your time. It'd be great if you could look at the other 2 queries I've posted as well.

Yup, doesn't work on pattern mode.  This was brought up several months ago, but as you can see it didn't get attended to.
