Same thing has happened to me - not too worried about the content but I'm currently abroad and having lots of issues getting the phone working again. That said wiping the SD card seems very odd
I'd suggest not updating if you're not at home
Probably a bit late for you, but this may help someone else.
Before doing ANY software update I always unmount any removable media.
Also, I connect the phone to my PC regularly and back-up all user data in any folders I can find.
I don't like the way Sony seems to insist we all put these updates on whether we want them or not !!!
... and it certainly isn't right that they roll out updates to the user community without (apparently) having tested them thoroughly first.
I'm on my third Xperia now (thought I should have learned by now
and I'm still trying to avoid updating the OS on my Z3 after the previous two models were runined (in my opinion) by unwanted and unnecessary 'improvements'.
My SD card was completely wiped after android 5.02 update.
When I logged into a wifi network the phone downloaded and installed the update without asking me, and then all of the sudden it said "unmounting SD card"
And I was like is going on? and then all of the sudden it said "erasing SD card" and by the time I tried to eject the card the phone had shut down.
It automatically rebooted installing the update, even though I never agreed to it.
I'm ready to sue SONY because I had gigs and gigs of photos and my kids on that 64 gig toshiba card.
I've verified it's been erased on a computer.
SO UPSET WITH SONY!
How do you disable the software from updating for fraq sakes, gawd forbid i have a choice in what's being remove/added to "my" phone and how do i disable the notification saying "xperia system update -->Download" from the drop down area? Dam you Sony and your " we know best" policy!
Same thing has just happened on my Z3+ this morning during the upgrade to Android Marshmallow (6.0).
The upgrade assured me no data would be lost and all apps would still be working.
Following the upgrade, half my apps no longer open because they were launched via the SD card.
All the movies and music I purchased via Priveledge Plus have disappeared.
All the OS Map data I purchased for my navigation apps have disappeared.
Hundreds of photos and videos have disappeared. The 'standard' file are still available via Google Photos, but all the photos produced by other apps (e.g. 360 panoramas) have disappeared.
Half my app icons now display a weird blue and red memory card icon instead of their original icon and most have lost their icon title so I can't work out what they are any more, and some cannot launch as they state that the card isn't accessible.
EE support don't care as it's Sony who rolled out the update.
quick update......it seems that my phone is slowly recovering itself, and an hour after the update, most of the app icons have started reappearing. It's almost as if the phone's operating system is gradually indexing files and data on the SD and making them available again, but it's very annoying (and worrying) that there is no message stating this is taking place. I've still not tried to do any more, and I'm just leaving it alone for now......
