I wish someone would give a solution to this problem. I think you are not giving importance because users use instant messaging applications. But I guess that's another big part of who uses it, as in my case.

SUS - Sony Update Service application

These three are official ways to update Sony phones.

Flashtool is for a little more advanced users and it's not official Sony way for update. With this application you can, for example, flash other firmwares prepared for different regions of the world.

It seems you used SUS or PCC so everything should be fine if you had this 'saving characters' option on previous firmware.
