Overheating problems with Xperia Z2

I bought my new Sony Xperia Z2 in Bulgaria on the 27-th May. I tested the camera in 4K video and normal mode. I noticed that the phone is getting hot after making some photos and video. When I recorded a 4K video the camera switched off after only 2 minutes with massege Overheating! I saw that many others had the same problem. My question is is there a chance to fix the problem. Can I return the phone and change it with another one?

You maybe able to improve the overheating issue by enabling stamina mode - > extended usage

Stamina mode will mean that things work slower on the phone.  Although I agree that it may reduce heat buildup, it's not really a proper solution.

Simply do not use your Z2 in direct sunlight 🙂 I was in a Cafe place and my Z2 was laying on the table then I took 5 photos. Camera turned off due overheat issue, I was using stamina mode but Z2 can't handle direct sunlight even in early summer.

@Neoshogun

I get the same issue in a house, no direct sunlight, ambient temperature 22C.  Overheats after about a minute of camera useage.

just had a brand new z2 to replace my now ageing galaxy s3.

build number is 14w26

it is warm in my office 20 + degrees but tolerable theres is no new software installed it is staight out of the box.

while playing with camera settings includidng some 4k stuff it crashed out and told me the camera had to cool off  (**bleep**) left it for a while to cool down as i knew there were 4k heat issues.

I then  recorded a video in standard/hd while camera was stationary and nothing moving in front of the camera after 5mins and 56 secs minutes i stopped recording and played back but got the message saying it will now shut down and cool off.

This is a joke surely!!!! some bizzare out of season april fool joke by Sony suffice to say its going straight back to EEE and i will now be getting a slightly water proofed s5.

I so wanted to like this phone the screen headphones waterproofing are all i wanted the only thing keeping me off the S5 was it had no fm radio.

@mattstant

which firmware is on your phone?  This is indeed disapointing (if it's a recent software build as well as a recent hardware build), as I was hoping to get my 14w16 replaced with a newer build (people have been saing that the overheat/camera issue is significantly less or non-existent in the newer phones).

Like I promised I have tested my Xperia camera (14W25) thouroughly and these are the results I got:

  • 4K - overheated after over 13 minutes of continous recording to external memory card (considering the fact that other flagships limit 4K video recording to 5 minutes (HTC & Samsung) I must say I'm pretty impressed)
  • 1080p - I gave up after 20 minutes of continuous recording as I got bored. I don't think I will ever need more than that anyway.
  • AR - same as above
  • Other camera options 15 or 20 minutes plus

The ambient temperature was 25 Celsius and after each test I allowed the phone to cool down for 10 minutes without using it.

In line with my tests I think that anyone who has overheating issues should return their phone for replacement as they must have a faulty unit.  I guess I must have a really lucky unit. In my opinion Sony fixed overheating issue at some point but decided to keep quiet about it. The manufacture date of my Xperia is 14W25.

If I were you guys I would start returnig your phones for replacements. In case anyone from Sony tells you that the phone is not capable of recording for so long, give me a shout! I'm more than happy to send you a proof.

Sony needs to take responsibility!

Sensination:  I'm sending my phone in soon, but not sure if they'll try to 'fix' it, or replace it outright.

Just incase they will send the same phone back to me, can you provide that proof thing you mentioned?

thx

Of course! I thought that the best proof would be a video of my phone continuously recording in 4 K made with another phone (bit of an inception thing :P). If you think of anything else I can also do that. Anyway let me know if you need it.
