Hello,
I seem to be having problems connecting my Xperia Play to my computer in MTP mode.
It has worked in the past but recently would not connect to PC Companion and when I checked Device Manager the phone was listed with an exclamation mark. I've tried uninstalling the device from Device Manager and allowed it to reinstall but now it fails to install the driver.
Any help would be appreciated 🙂
P.S. Not sure if it makes a differfence but I'm running Windows 7 64bit with Service Pack 1
Ok i checked the issue after reading all the post in there and found it quite strange that connection failure occured for many people. But another thing that make me mad is having that MTP APP application that became bigger and bigger and now reached 9 mb in a week for me... Having those kind of data stored on internal memory where we want to save as much space as possible is something sony Ericsson need to patch/correct.
Ok here is what i found:
I tried deleting the data of the MTPAPP to check if those data are optional and could be deleted safely... Of course not 😕
After deleting them the phone couldn't connect in media transfer mode anymore ... in fact the first time it was detected but no files was shown in explorer
I tried a reboot of the phone but this time nothing. the Xperia play is available on 'printer and other device' but nothing on My computer and of course i can't access my files via Media transfer.
The only way to access is using the usb mode mass storage... so i tried to reboot another time and still nothing
I thought that i needed to restore the phone (factory restore) to be able to get the data i deleted back...
But there is another way to solve the issue and quite easily.
You need first to launch pc companion on your computer (optional)
Then in the phone go in settings > Sony Ericsson Menu > connectivity
Enable install of PC companion and be sure that the usb connection mode is set to multimedia transfer mode.
When it's done disconnect / connect your phone to your PC
IT should start the installation of the driver again like if it was the first time.
After a little while you should see your phone appearing in explorer and browse into your folder without problem.
You can go and check you app MtpApp in the application manager that is now > 6MB
The data are in fact installed on the device (xperia play) too in the process.
That's why it could fail...
The two device are in fact needing some files to be able to share information.
My sentences are sometimes not really clear but they are understandable (i'am french that's why)
I will try to translate this post in french and spanish later
I hope Sony Ericsson could figure out a way to put all the necessary data in PC only but i'am not sure it's possible also please do something about the size of this application or move it to SD with a new update...
Sony should correct easily the problem by updating pc companion on computer
man, you are awesome. that is the solution. every time i connect the phone i just press "Ignore" the installation of PC companion and that is it
lol I knew it
Sony need to at least make a tutorial in their assistance...
Lazy as²
found another way to resolve the issue! the hint came from the new update of PC companion i got today
In fact you can click to verify if the phone is updated then you will have the step by step process to connect the phone it will block to the second step
now connect your phone and let PC companion detect your phone and install the driver
If it does not work enable install of pc companion see post above and retry the same step
PC companion works perfectly for my Xperia play?
pc companion is of course compatible with xperia play and not only it support xperia play but xperia play permit to install it if you select it on your phone.
Thread resolved and should be closed now
I'm not sure this thread should be closed just yet as there is still a problem.
As it stands, it is not possible to transfer media to the SD card via USB or wireless if there is already quite a bit of content on the SD card (I'm not sure if this capacity, number of files, or the type of files - I have about 16GB of music on a 32BG card).
As this problem occurs with other manufacturers handsets (I've heard of similar issues with Samsung phones) it looks like it may be a problem with Android 2.3 and not the Sony Ericsson software but it would be nice if we could have confirmation of this posted here from SE and notification if the issue is fixed.
For now, I'll just have to use the USB cable and MSC mode 🙂
Jon.
P.S. Thanks for everyones help trying to work around this issue.
in fact there is another tool who seems to mess with mtp connection. and for me it shouldn't be on the same thread.
each time i have some problem connecting my phone i kill liveware tool in the process and the connection is made without problem.
Sometimes it works with it but it's rare.
go to settings>storage>unmount SD card. then conenct in MTP mode and everything will work. this fix worked for me. then if you want to look at the sd card just drop down and connect the sd card in the other mode.
