Are you using the stock messaging app? this happens when using other apps for messaging or if you have other apps open which are causing a conflict
Sorry to hear that you're having issues with the messaging app.
I recommend that you take a backup of your messages in case you have messages you want to save. You can do that using the preinstalled app Backup and restore or with PC Companion.
Then download this app and delete all SMS/MMS using it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.infolife.eraser
After this, restart the phone and restore the backup and see if the issue remains.
