Max Youtube VR resolution is 720p after update

Yesterday I could view 4k youtube clips if I wanted to but after today's update, I can't pick higher than 720p. Did they lock the YouTube resolution to the screen resolution?

@ungeherr

That's not accurate, first, your phone doesn't have a 4K display, only the Z5 Premium does, second, this is a Youtube restriction, not even the Z5 Premium can access 4K video content on youtube.

@uliwooly it doesn't matter if it doesn't have a 4k screen. Yesterday it was possible. I now see that my girlfriends samsung note 4 can only access 2k resolution. Seems as youtube has changed so that you can't get higher resolution than your screen resolution

I have multiple Xperias, from the X10 to the X and I have never seen that option to watch a video on 4K on any of them.

It's not called 4k. It's called 2160p. It's not true 4K but it's the highest quality at YouTube and it's noticeable even on a 720p screen when playing 360 videos with a vr headset. 720p looks like crap with 360 videos.

Youtube's 4K resolution is 4096 × 3072 or 3,840 x 2,160 at 60fps but this might different in certain regions.

4K UHD is a resolution of 3840 pixels × 2160 lines

Ultra Wide Television 5120 × 2160

But do contact Youtube on this

Z3 has NEVER shown 4k content via YouTube app.
If you'd like, I can prove it.
And your gf note 4 has NEVER displayed more than 1440p either through the YouTube app.

Vr videos are different as they don't have a 2D size, they are stitched into a ball from a much higher resolution but only display a visible % at any given time

Oh, and YouTube has 8k videos now.

Ok, to clarify I'm talking about 360 videos and those used to be available in 2160 resolution on my z3compact. That I'm sure of. I have used this resolution almost ever day for the last month on this very phone so it's not really up for a debate. We can stop writing here as the conversation is going nowhere and I will contact youtube to find out what has happened.

Hey ungeherr, even if you could view YouTube videos in 4K on your device, if your screen resolution is 720p, your phone will downscale it to match your phone.
