how do you silence an incoming text alert on Xperia P

I think I am missing something obvious here, I have allocated a tone for my incoming notification messages, there are some instances where it is not appropriate so I want to switch it off quickly (not necessarily open the message, just stop the alert from sounding) all previous phones have been easy, my last Samsung I just had to touch the screen and the phone shut up, but I cannot seem to make my Xperia P go silent.

I have pressed the power button, nothing

I have pressed the UP volume button, nothing

I have pressed the DOWN volume button, nothing

I have swiped the screen, nothing

I physically have to swipe the screen, go into the phone, into messages, and open the message before the thing shuts up

Previous phone I just had to touch the screen, some phones you just have to turn them over, surely Sony have not messed this up that much that you cannot silence your own phone ?

(Yes, I know there are silent and vibrate modes, but I want to hear my phone)

Normally to ”shut up” the phone, you need to press vol down.I do not know why yours does not work...

Pressing volume up or down to silence the phone works when receiving an incoming call. As I understand this only for calls and not for messaging.

So can I presume there is no way to silence an incoming message ?

I find that rather unusual in todays quality phones, when it has been easy to do in old phones Slightly_frowning_Face

for a message, you do not have to use a long ringtone, you could use only a vibration or a small beep.

Hello VillaYouth,

In your case you have to press Power button and after that slide down notification bar.

That always works for me!

Regards.

If the screen is locked, how is he supposed to slide the notification bar?It is enough to press power button or vol - to silence the call.As for message,i have never had a long ringtone to see if this works?

Hello alexdon,

What is the connection between the locked screen and the notification bar ?

Illuminate the screen and simply sliding down notification bar. (even when the screen is locked)
