Google Maps- position hopping

I have 2 x Xperia Z2, bought 1 month apart. Both are D6503, Lollipop 5.1.1, Build 23.4.A.1.232  (Australia)

Both exhibit the following behaviour identically and its driving me mad (pardon the pun). All google apps are updated to the latest.

Whilst navigating with Google maps 9.19.1  (also previous version as well) the cursor indicating current position will freeze and then all of a sudden jump tp present position 5 seconds (and sometimes more) later. This is very frustrating for navigation as if the freeze is during a crucial change in direction or lane etc this can be missed. Had the two phones side by side and they would freeze, jump at the EXACT same  positions on the map. Very odd.  Tried rebooting in SAFE MODE...exact same behaviour. The behaviour will start within 5 minute of starting navigation and for first five minutes the cursor will smoothly follow car position along map. The issue then continues constantly and sometimes will completely stop ..ie just frozen to one spot on map. Phones have clear access to sky so GPS signal should not be issue.

All other apps function fine.

Anyone else experiencing this? What can I try to resolve?

What if you repair the device with PCC > do NOT install any app, do not even enter your Gmail app > test google maps

software repair

I'm  reluctant to blow away all my stuff on my phone by doing the repair/PC companion etc.

My logic is that I have two phones exhibitng exact same behaviour, yet one is used frequently with many apps loaded (mine), the other infrequently (very few apps loaded- my wifes). Both the workaround of navigating in flight mode resolves the issue temporarily. This fact plus the huge amount of evidence at https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=81140  tells me its a software issue in lollipop that affects many people, not just my two phones. What coincidence would it be that two of my phones just happened to develop the same fault at same time and the answer is to erase/start again. Obviously there are Z2 users who dont have an issue but very strange that those of us who do all get the fault at 5 minutes into navigation and then onwards.

It seems I either

1) wait for a fix from Sony/Google  (from the google forum it appears that latetst update for Xperia M users fixed the issue so maybe next update for Z2 will  fix)

2) Hope that the incovenience of wiping the phone and starting again on two physical phones will fix the issue-- I'm dubious but maybe if no fix is coming any time soon I will have to give it a try.
