Google Maps- position hopping

Google Maps- position hopping

I have 2 x Xperia Z2, bought 1 month apart. Both are D6503, Lollipop 5.1.1, Build 23.4.A.1.232  (Australia)

Both exhibit the following behaviour identically and its driving me mad (pardon the pun). All google apps are updated to the latest.

Whilst navigating with Google maps 9.19.1  (also previous version as well) the cursor indicating current position will freeze and then all of a sudden jump tp present position 5 seconds (and sometimes more) later. This is very frustrating for navigation as if the freeze is during a crucial change in direction or lane etc this can be missed. Had the two phones side by side and they would freeze, jump at the EXACT same  positions on the map. Very odd.  Tried rebooting in SAFE MODE...exact same behaviour. The behaviour will start within 5 minute of starting navigation and for first five minutes the cursor will smoothly follow car position along map. The issue then continues constantly and sometimes will completely stop ..ie just frozen to one spot on map. Phones have clear access to sky so GPS signal should not be issue.

All other apps function fine.

Anyone else experiencing this? What can I try to resolve?

You could try these:

1)download an offline map(around your residential area) then drive to a location within the offline map using the navigation

2)test your gps by using other 3rd party map apps like Waze etc

see if the problem arises after doing those steps.
And btw check if your internet signal is strong of vice versa at those "issue related areas"

@jc2016

Do you have stamina mode on or any battery apps ?

Settings > location > how accurate have you set it?

Settings > about phone > diagnostics > test > test gps

thanks for suggestions. The issue occurs no matter where the car is physically (all over city, on country road , on highway etc)

The issue is occuring with offline maps mode. I have not tried with internet as I do not have  mobile data sim (voice calls , sms only)

I have tried clearing google maps cache/data under settings->apps->maps.  Then re-downloaded the offline map. Same problem..after approx 5 minutes usage it starts the freezing/catching up hopping business.

stamina mode is on. Have tried with car adaptor supplyiing power (found a forum suggestng this)..no help.

Location is set to Device only-high accuracy (ie GPS satellite only)

GPS test under Settings > about phone > diagnostics > test > test gps  shows "PASSED" immediately.

found this

https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=81140

I suspect this is whats going on as it matches my experience. Will be testng navigation in flight mode tomorrow as many users suggest on that forum as a temporary workaround. Looks like its a OS problem and am surprised that not more noise made about it by other Z2 users, hopefully google/sony will release a fix soon. Explains why exact same beahviour on two phones.

No, I cannot recreate this, but my Z2 has been reset with PCC recently.

confirmed... as per https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=81140

I turned on flight mode and navigated with no problem at all, very smooth  for over 30 minutes  using google maps. Turned off flight mode and within 60 seconds it started the stupid bunny hopping, freezing.  Turned on flight mode again..back to smooth navigation.

I also ran the same test using Here maps..same result. Also confirmed the workaround works on the second phone.

This tells me all that pepople are saying at  https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=81140  is definitely true and there is an issue with lollipop/GPS.  Who will fix it? SONY or Google?????
