Firstly this phone is fantastic and I have already conmverted several friends from apple to sony.
Last night I though I would really test it out - went out with a few mates, each with different phones and every time the Nokia N8 took better pictures.
Honestly - my xperia took ages to focus and 5 out of 9 shots were very very poor. In direct comparision the N8 - once he had it set up, took photos faster and each one was in focus - non of this waiting while it figures out what its doing,.
In day light - mine wins no problem - in pubs and low light areas I found this phone to have major problems with focus, and tiime delay in pressing and actual capture of images --- dont get me wrong - I can take it out of my pocket - press the button and hey presto - a photo very very quick --but what is the point when its not in focus and then I have to try again, then again, by which time, my mates are laughing as they have unlocked their phone, aimed and took a good photo.
SONY -- please look into this -- is this my handset or systemic?
Looking at the response this is systemic - if this is a software issue then please sort it, if hardware - recall and replace.
For those of you with the problem - the best photos I can get are to disable face detection, scenes to OFF,,focus mode - have it on touch or infinity, metering centre. At least on these settings I get more than 1 out of 10 photos which I can use.
THIS IS STILL AN ISSUE!!! SONY PLEASE RESPOND!

The camera in this smartphone is really not very good, but enjoy it all the same can. To capture clearer need to fix the camera for example elbows resting hands into something solid. In this case, the pictures are not as blurred. Secondly when you do then choose a designated special modes as appropriate, and not automatic. If you are photographing in a dark room then choose a higher coefficient ISO manually then it will be less noise in the picture.
I just bought an Xperia S LT26i and upgraded it to ICS. The phone is very nice. It is very fast. I love it so much. but the camera of my Xperia Arc Lt15i is better... Look at these pictures taken by my Xperia S. they are useless. I've regret I have purchased this Item. I better stayed with my Xperia Arc. The camera was better. I only upgraded because of the camera. 12MP is very tempting. but my 8MP Xperia Arc is better. Please fix this. all shots were taken with flash. It took me 5 times to get a photo with proper focus. It's very bad during low light. If I go out where the sun is shining, then the focus is fine. the only problem is indoors. It is USELESS...
The camera of the smartphone requires only one thing - quick adjustment of sharpness.
be patient until it focus autometically press your camera key softly and hold the key for a while until it get focused if not yet then release the key and start moving a little try again till it focus, any way XS camera is just awesome still problem with the ICS
Is this you called the best camera phone of sony? Focus problem while clicking pictures. Ok that thing is fine but focus problem while recording videos. This is indeed the software problem but your company does not bother. It completely spoil our videos and also flicker problems during video recording. Please launch a firmware update in which these bugs should be fixed.
Thank you if you will discuss my request among your developers.
I hope that part of the problem with cameras will be solved with the new Android 4.1.
My phone is absolutely terrible indoors, as stated earlier, outdoors fine, but indoors may as well simply not bother! I have tried bracketing the exposure, Flash on, Flash off, white light balance etc etc, I have had better results with a Box Brownie!, takes forever to actually lock on to focus, and when it does the photos are absolutely terrible! all I can add is that it is not fit for purpose SONY!
Just to add another voice, i picked the S because of the good reviews the camera and image quality got. Im very disappointed. My old HTC Desire produced much better pictures, sharper focus, more detail and less noise. Ive tried all sorts of ISO & metering settings but they all come out roughly the same. Its as if the compression is at fault and its overdone. Is there a way of selecting the compression? Please fix this or im afraid its the last Sony phone i buy.
What firmware do you have? It's widely reported that the latest firmware 6.1.A.2.55 has fixed the camera focusing issue. After the update the camera is working as it's suppose to be.
I have the same issue but I'm now using "camera zoom fx" (downloadable from play store) and I can take pretty nice pictures
