Camera - xperia s - focusing problems and poor images

Firstly this phone is fantastic and I have already conmverted several friends from apple to sony.

Last night I though I would really test it out - went out with a few mates, each with different phones and every time the Nokia N8 took better pictures.

Honestly - my xperia took ages to focus and 5 out of 9 shots were very very poor. In direct comparision the N8 - once he had it set up, took photos faster and each one was in focus - non of this waiting while it figures out what its doing,.

In day light - mine wins no problem - in pubs and low light areas I found this phone to have major problems with focus, and tiime delay in pressing and actual capture of images --- dont get me wrong - I can take it out of my pocket - press the button and hey presto - a photo very very quick --but what is the point when its not in focus and then I have to try again, then again, by which time, my mates are laughing as they have unlocked their phone, aimed and took a good photo.

SONY -- please look into this --  is this my handset or systemic?

Looking at the response this is systemic - if this is a software issue then please sort it, if hardware - recall and replace.

For those of you with the problem - the best photos I can get are to disable face detection, scenes to OFF,,focus mode - have it on touch or infinity, metering centre. At least on these settings I get more than 1 out of 10 photos which I can use.

THIS IS STILL AN ISSUE!!! SONY PLEASE RESPOND!

With a tiny light sensor on XS, this is normal.  Come may claims that S3 is beter in night shoot.  It is just because S3 applies a stronger noise reduction to reduce the grains but it will make the photos less sharp and will less contrast.  The only phone which is good at night shoot is the Nokia 808 which has a much bigger sensor.

Goodnight

The above photos were taken in a brightly lit place, this did not happen on my previous phone Xperia Arc s not had these noise problems. Is it better sensor Xperia Arc s?

If I see my photos and my videos on my TV SONY BRAVIA is completely unacceptable for a phone of this range: full of noise "red sand".

Annex a video taken from my phone, I hope you can see it on a HD tv .... Dan shame!

The video also shows noise "red sand" is a red dot unbearable. Believe that the sensor is defective (and clean the lens).

Thanks for your attention.

CONFIGURATION VIDEO:

SCENES: OFF

Video resolution: FULLHD

FOCUS MODE: INFINITE

Image Stabilizer: OFF

I'm not sure why your images came out so grainy I've taken pictures in Low lighting and it doesn't come out as grainy, try setting your ISO settings from Auto to something like 100 if you're in a well lit area, it should reduce the noise level. When indoors in low but substantially lit areas I use 100 ISO auto may set it to 800 or 400 on auto. try it and let me know of your progress.

Below in the attachment is the camera apps from gx which can be ported to our xperia s. I've

tried it in stock Ics latest firmware version .55 and it worked flawlessly . U can instal it as regualar application. I found that compression is

somewhat reduced, ie i got image size in the range of 2.7 mb- 5mb and hence i found more details. Secondly i found focus problem improved

compared to our stock camera. Please check it and let me know . Works only in stock ICS. Before installing this application please back up

first. Instal it as regular app.

Update 1 : Editing build.prop for better camera , video recording and Jpeg quality.

Add this 3 lines in build.prop in ADDITIONAL_BUILD_PROPERTIES

ro.media.enc.jpeg.quality=100

ro.media.dec.jpeg.memcap=8000000

ro.media.enc.hprof.vid.bps=8000000

I've installed that too (after backing up original apps via Airdroid). I don't have root but it installed fine.

First impressions are definitely good; just photos around the house and the camera focuses very fast, especially for photos.

Haven't tested in environments that it's given me problems in the past yet, but i'm hoping it's good. Cautiously optimistic.

It's a pity Sony haven't released a XperiaS specific fix instead we have to do this with the help of the userbase community, but if it works, then finally i may have a phone that's perfect for me...almost a year after i bought it and tons of new phones have come out. Not going to forgive Sony for that.

@ djtharisha and jad Total agree the camera mod by that guy @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2009333 really solved our problem related to focus and image quality. Thanks to him who made this mod; the work which had to be done by sony/

Now next is needed a fix for bravia engine for unlocked bootloader on ICS
