Firstly this phone is fantastic and I have already conmverted several friends from apple to sony.
Last night I though I would really test it out - went out with a few mates, each with different phones and every time the Nokia N8 took better pictures.
Honestly - my xperia took ages to focus and 5 out of 9 shots were very very poor. In direct comparision the N8 - once he had it set up, took photos faster and each one was in focus - non of this waiting while it figures out what its doing,.
In day light - mine wins no problem - in pubs and low light areas I found this phone to have major problems with focus, and tiime delay in pressing and actual capture of images --- dont get me wrong - I can take it out of my pocket - press the button and hey presto - a photo very very quick --but what is the point when its not in focus and then I have to try again, then again, by which time, my mates are laughing as they have unlocked their phone, aimed and took a good photo.
SONY -- please look into this -- is this my handset or systemic?
Looking at the response this is systemic - if this is a software issue then please sort it, if hardware - recall and replace.
For those of you with the problem - the best photos I can get are to disable face detection, scenes to OFF,,focus mode - have it on touch or infinity, metering centre. At least on these settings I get more than 1 out of 10 photos which I can use.
THIS IS STILL AN ISSUE!!! SONY PLEASE RESPOND!

the focus isnt on the people either its behind them, and if isset to a high iso (like set to auto) you will get motion blur even with steady shot on
try to root your camera software.. as mine same problem i encoutered even thoug i upgraded to ics, no change at all, after rooting my phone cam, it gives me life and now i love the phone.. Just follow the instruction..
Sensor is clean and not scratched, tried instagram. And the issue is still current. And i have no interest in flashing my phone.
I just want it work. WORK!
Bought xperia S 2 days back and the camera is really bad ... had xperia ray earlier and its camera is far better. Even in daylight if your picture has a dark area you can see lot of noise. Indoor shots in your room lit with tubelight (1 or 2) the camera has problem in focusing at one go. The indoor pictures are quite bad even with flash.
Problem with ISO settings too. If you change ISO from Auto to say 100 and switch off the camera and turn it on again the settings shift to ISO Auto again.
Xperia S camera is xxxx. Same happened to me, I had Xperia Arc before and I loved its camera ( with the Arc I always used the autoScene mode and the did the rest). When I bought this xxxx I thought I was upgrading, but no! I am so dissapointed with this xxxx, And the worst is that the support guys said that they passed the issue to the developers or something like that, but that was back in March, and here we are 4 MONTHS LATER still waiting for a solution to the problem with the camera. SONY PLEASE GIVE SOME SUPPORT TO YOUR COSTUMERS! C'mon be responsable!

not all users are experiencing this problem, did you ended up replacing your phone with a new Xperia S ?
Rubbish is not near to what feel this phone is! But that word is prohibited here.
