Camera - xperia s - focusing problems and poor images

Firstly this phone is fantastic and I have already conmverted several friends from apple to sony.

Last night I though I would really test it out - went out with a few mates, each with different phones and every time the Nokia N8 took better pictures.

Honestly - my xperia took ages to focus and 5 out of 9 shots were very very poor. In direct comparision the N8 - once he had it set up, took photos faster and each one was in focus - non of this waiting while it figures out what its doing,.

In day light - mine wins no problem - in pubs and low light areas I found this phone to have major problems with focus, and tiime delay in pressing and actual capture of images --- dont get me wrong - I can take it out of my pocket - press the button and hey presto - a photo very very quick --but what is the point when its not in focus and then I have to try again, then again, by which time, my mates are laughing as they have unlocked their phone, aimed and took a good photo.

SONY -- please look into this --  is this my handset or systemic?

Looking at the response this is systemic - if this is a software issue then please sort it, if hardware - recall and replace.

For those of you with the problem - the best photos I can get are to disable face detection, scenes to OFF,,focus mode - have it on touch or infinity, metering centre. At least on these settings I get more than 1 out of 10 photos which I can use.

THIS IS STILL AN ISSUE!!! SONY PLEASE RESPOND!

either or just create a new thread and PM

Problem is relatedto the flash and focus (something out of sync there) in the eve (low light not dark) take a pis or 2 without flash, yes more noise but you will see better detail and sharpness, then take same pic with flash and pics are blurry, lack detail and sharpness... so I think there is some software glitch between the focussing and the flash.... If only sony would DO SOMETHING and admit they are looking into it!!! not what I was expecting from a 'flagship' cameraphone....

@ ghostrider: Totally BS what your saying. Lots of people have no problems with camera. Last week I spoke someone of a phone store and he said only one Xperia returned with issues. According to him (why should he lie) Xperia is one of the best phones he sell with the best camera.

I'm often on another tech forum and there's a thread about Xperia S. Hundreds of people have Xperia S and yes there are some issues but minor. Haven't heard much of camera issues, just a few.

There are also threads about other phones like SGSII and 3, Htc OneS and X, Iphone4s. Every phone has it's issues even Iphone.

My brother in law has a brand new Iphone4s and his phone has been resetted three times because of some problems with network and email/whatsapp.

I made pictures with Iphone and XS in low light and theres little difference between them. Both very good.

I try not to use flash when taking pictures as this is a LED flash not Xenon flash, I rather use other lightsource or take advantage of the backlit sensor.

@Garret14 I agree, there are users complaining about focus issues, but there are a LOT of users who aren't bc they don't have any issues, and for the most part if you don't have any issues you don't go to a support forum to say hey, I don't have any issues with me phone

Its not a perfect phone nor perfect camera, just like the iphone 4S galaxy nexus, galaxy SIII they all have their flaws but focus issues might be on faulty phones that must be replaced, also perhaps changing the camera settings will help a lot

I think this phone makes good photots. I don't think I have problems with focus even when snapping a picture in complete darkness with flash.

What I don't like is that in low light, it tends to make noisy pictures with color-noise, which is pretty ugly to look at.

To take good pictures, you need to learn about using different scene modes. For indoor pics, Party works the best, imo. In complete darkness, try Night Scene mode.

Also, learn about metering and white balance. To fix noisy pictures, I use a photoshop plugin called Neat Image. Try also reducing the pictures to something like 1600x1200 (remember the aspect ratio), it will dramatically improve sharpness.

And last but not least, before taking a pic, CLEAN YOUR SENSOR. Snapping the picture with dirty sensor will make it blurry and washed out, and you'll also get weird lighting.

If you want I can send you some samples.
