Firstly this phone is fantastic and I have already conmverted several friends from apple to sony.
Last night I though I would really test it out - went out with a few mates, each with different phones and every time the Nokia N8 took better pictures.
Honestly - my xperia took ages to focus and 5 out of 9 shots were very very poor. In direct comparision the N8 - once he had it set up, took photos faster and each one was in focus - non of this waiting while it figures out what its doing,.
In day light - mine wins no problem - in pubs and low light areas I found this phone to have major problems with focus, and tiime delay in pressing and actual capture of images --- dont get me wrong - I can take it out of my pocket - press the button and hey presto - a photo very very quick --but what is the point when its not in focus and then I have to try again, then again, by which time, my mates are laughing as they have unlocked their phone, aimed and took a good photo.
SONY -- please look into this -- is this my handset or systemic?
Looking at the response this is systemic - if this is a software issue then please sort it, if hardware - recall and replace.
For those of you with the problem - the best photos I can get are to disable face detection, scenes to OFF,,focus mode - have it on touch or infinity, metering centre. At least on these settings I get more than 1 out of 10 photos which I can use.
THIS IS STILL AN ISSUE!!! SONY PLEASE RESPOND!

did you use the shutter or the screen to snap the picture?
also did you tried night scene mode? make sure you don't move the camera or that you use a tripod
as if Im going to be carrying a tripod around for my phone - get real, read this full thread. I'm on my 3rd handset - this one is now going on ebay. wont buy again.
uliwooly the problem is poor or limited focus capabilities which is compounded by buggy firmware. I have posted images, and two you tube videos,,, how much evidence do you need.??
Ive had many phones, i know what I am doing, this is the worst camera phone I have used. this phone is not fit for purpose
i am using shutter mode. and the night scene mode just helped a bit. but still had something on the eyes. and when i took the picture about 2 meter it was really poor.
when i tried capturing images from sleep mode it couldn't focus
the image also broken when zoomed
i think i am agree with batman1056 that the problem lies in the poor or limited focus capabilities.
pictures with low light when taken from sleep mode as you said, are quite blurry, this is normal with any camera, it's hard for cameras to focus on low light, but it doesn't mean they have to do a poor job, can you post a picture using night scene mode.
Seems that some people are giving lame excuses over there.. I will have to upload some pics and tell me what you think of this joke. And yes I KNOW HOW TO USE A CAMERA, been using Smartphones since XDA in 2002.
Notice the face and hand colors... still don't understand where the red colors came from....
Single Focus, Auto ISO, Normal Scene, Focus time : 4 seconds, Flash ON
Using screen shot button, Flash is AUTO, Stabilization ON, Single Focus time ~ 3 seconds, Normal Scene with good light condition. Epic disaster ( My colleage has the Nokia N9 and he was like that can't be true )
Pictures has been resized to 40% before upload so the original ones look even worse.
And now Sony can you please deal with it ?! I personally don't care anymore since I'm dumping the handset but doing you a favor since it seems you are absolutely clueless about it.
PLEASE admit it, the camera on this device is nothing . Worst experience with a mobile camera.
PS: microshots are surprisingly excellent but this is not my thing...

Remember the forum guidelines when you post here
Ok so my post was removed because of the word " cr*p " ? I've seen way worse posts and nobody said anything about.
I spent like half an hour uploading and commenting on every pic; if you were fair, you would have edited any part of the post violating the rule and kept the pictures I've put.
But it seems that pictures were so bad that even moderators here refused to admit it.
Im out of this forum for good; Xda-dev still remains my first home since 2003.
Goodluck guys.
Karim.
Edit : Thank you for restoring the post. Regards.
This thread seems to be digressing into the fault being with the quick shot function using the cpature button from sleep. whilst this is potentially an issue, as its not getting a chance to lock on before capture, it's not the end of the story. I expect some sort of failure rate with this facility as you can't always combine speed and accuracy (especially in low light).
But the problem is deeper with the focus system, as the camera hunts when recording video, even in acceptable light conditions. I have a lot of footage which never locks on a face, despite the face detection putting a box around it to say it's identified a face...
