Firstly this phone is fantastic and I have already conmverted several friends from apple to sony.
Last night I though I would really test it out - went out with a few mates, each with different phones and every time the Nokia N8 took better pictures.
Honestly - my xperia took ages to focus and 5 out of 9 shots were very very poor. In direct comparision the N8 - once he had it set up, took photos faster and each one was in focus - non of this waiting while it figures out what its doing,.
In day light - mine wins no problem - in pubs and low light areas I found this phone to have major problems with focus, and tiime delay in pressing and actual capture of images --- dont get me wrong - I can take it out of my pocket - press the button and hey presto - a photo very very quick --but what is the point when its not in focus and then I have to try again, then again, by which time, my mates are laughing as they have unlocked their phone, aimed and took a good photo.
SONY -- please look into this -- is this my handset or systemic?
Looking at the response this is systemic - if this is a software issue then please sort it, if hardware - recall and replace.
For those of you with the problem - the best photos I can get are to disable face detection, scenes to OFF,,focus mode - have it on touch or infinity, metering centre. At least on these settings I get more than 1 out of 10 photos which I can use.
THIS IS STILL AN ISSUE!!! SONY PLEASE RESPOND!

Don't buy this carp! I have it and want to get rid of that! Definitely not worth my 500€!!!!!
Firstly, I'm a great fan of SonyEricsson (now Sony) I had used their phone since T18 era and then T610, K750, W910, X10mini, Xperia Arc, all are great phones for me at that time with their respective era and I'm happy using them until I had the latest Xperia S phone. DON'T BUY IT !! or you will regret. thought this phone gonna take good picture but really got me dissapointed... I've bought it on 1st May and I just sold it yesterday. The CAMERA was suck! especially when you take photos in low light conditions i.e. pubs, ktv rooms, disco. Compare to my previous phone Xperia Arc, this is phone (their flagship device heard from phone review over internet like CNET) is just a f*** up! I don't know why all the photos I took in the ktv room on my friends birthday turn out to be all with the flashy eye or red eye I don't what it should be called and blurry. The auto focus too seem have big problem to focus even in day light and more worst in night time or indoor incandecent light condition. I also had took a video which I really holding it steadily (I'm sure of it) but the video is shaking itself. Here I will attached some photos and a video for you and the other peoples out there who plan to but this phone for your reference.
Below here is the edited version of video above by auto YouTube enchancement for you to compare the shakiness.

Been there, haven't sold mine yet seems no one is interested in.... I think the camera issue is known way more than I thought. I'm astonished to be honest, not a single update from Admins or Moderators here since weeks. Will ICS solve this issue ? what is the reply from Dev department
At the company I work in, if there is a problem reported by a customer ( Operator specifically ) a major or critical priority is raised and followed up with dead-line according to SLAs no longer than 5 working days. Nokia solved the dropping connectivity issue on their Lumia 900 in 2 days offering refund and Sony is not even caring about us.
I pay for a brand because I pay for the support, else I would have picked a Huawei or LG mobile phone.
Obviously we are left in the cold. Thanks
hi there, it looks like i have the same problem as the other... is the problem can be fixed? if it can, when? the ICS update is in the corner while the phone still in big problems.
hope the sony company can take this problem seriously before the ICS update launched. coz we all have spent a lot of money to bought this phone.
and as the time goes by the sony xperia s's reputation is dropping. thanks:smileyhappy:
Hi Sony Team,
Found the root cause for this issue (If found when can we expect the fix for this) or your r still investigating
I also have the latest firmware .73 and I am suffering the same issue with autofocus and low light conditions.
First issue is that the autofocus, with low light, sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.
The second main issue is that pictures taken under low light conditions are very noisy and with very poor colors, even that the phone has the "great" Exmor r sensor.
which settings are you using? are you using the shutter or the screen?
The best performance I got with low light condition pictures was by setting:
1) Normal scene
2) Single auto focus
3) ISO 100 (More than ISO 200 is a noisy picture for sure)
4) Flash Auto
5) Scenes Off
6) Image Stabiliser On
And you even still getting pictures unfocused and noisy for the kind of sensor the phone has.
try w/o flash
There is a bug with image stabiliser that causes the ISO to set to auto, it'll shoot way past 100.
