Camera - xperia s - focusing problems and poor images

Firstly this phone is fantastic and I have already conmverted several friends from apple to sony.

Last night I though I would really test it out - went out with a few mates, each with different phones and every time the Nokia N8 took better pictures.

Honestly - my xperia took ages to focus and 5 out of 9 shots were very very poor. In direct comparision the N8 - once he had it set up, took photos faster and each one was in focus - non of this waiting while it figures out what its doing,.

In day light - mine wins no problem - in pubs and low light areas I found this phone to have major problems with focus, and tiime delay in pressing and actual capture of images --- dont get me wrong - I can take it out of my pocket - press the button and hey presto - a photo very very quick --but what is the point when its not in focus and then I have to try again, then again, by which time, my mates are laughing as they have unlocked their phone, aimed and took a good photo.

SONY -- please look into this --  is this my handset or systemic?

Looking at the response this is systemic - if this is a software issue then please sort it, if hardware - recall and replace.

For those of you with the problem - the best photos I can get are to disable face detection, scenes to OFF,,focus mode - have it on touch or infinity, metering centre. At least on these settings I get more than 1 out of 10 photos which I can use.

THIS IS STILL AN ISSUE!!! SONY PLEASE RESPOND!

Yep, watched that TV show segmant on catchup; the presenter was recording a video in the afternoon with plenty of natural light outside and even in that condition he stated that the video focussing was noticeably slow...it's just as well they didn't try it out in a lower light indoor conditions as they'd see how slow the focus can really be and how much it can struggle to lock on.

Don't understand why focus is THAT slow considering how powerful the phone is. Hoping it's not a hardware issue.

If this is a software issue I hope the fix will come with the next update.

For now, the investigation is still ongoing so I cannot say what will be done.

I have so far not seen anyone with the .73 software post that they have this problem.

All markets have not received this SW yet though.

Thanks for the update Batman. I'm about 6 weeks into ownership now, so I don't think phones4U will be so friendly 😞

I've booked a repair, so I have to send the phone back to Sony.

I'm just waiting on a micro sim adaptor to turn up off ebay, so I can use my old phone while the phones being fixed.

Starting to see yellow spots now, so the phone needs to get sent back anyway, but hopefull they will fix the camera issue at the same time.

Will post back when I get the phone repaired.

Pix - now I am worried - my last handset got the yellow bits after about 3- 4 weeks, they came on very quickly after some sun and warm weather - if the UK gets a summer then I just hope the phone can cope with it.

Where you from?

Any update or ETA on this?

No news unfortunately. The investigation is still ongoing and I have nothing new to tell. No ETA either.

I have still not seen one single user (that I can recall) with the .73 software complain about focusing issues. I have no official confirmation saying there's any camera changes on this software so it might be a long shot. My point is, keep checking for updates and see if you can get this software version. It might help. If you get it, please let me know if there's any difference at all.

I'm in the UK. The yellow spots, seem to vary in visibility, but then we haven't had much in the way of hot weather...

There's some talk of a three week wait for repairs in the UK from the yellow tint thread on here, so I have the fear of sending it back... Might wait until I hear sounds of quicker turnaround in the service centre before I send it in.

Marcus - There doesn't seem to be an eta of .73 reaching the unbranded UK market... The ICS update will turn up sooner at this rate!

Hi I am the first one with .73 firmware to report the camera problem.

Thanks for posting. Bad news but still good to know. I will add this information to the ongoing investigation.

I should tell you all that I am not the only one reporting feedback on this. All our customer support centers and my colleagues on the social media channels also file reports on stuff like this.

Markus - we are not blaming you, and we understand your just the messenger.

Frustrating for Sony, as this issue isnt something they really need when trying to enter a saturated market place and are trying to push the new brand. As you know its the brand that sells the product, then the product specifications.

Question - When ICS comes out and IF the problem is still not fixed what will happen then? Will they do an exchange in a local shop for a new one? Note this is my second one as the first has this problem and the first also had the Yellow screen issues too.

Under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 goods must be:

  • 'as described',
  • 'of satisfactory quality', and
  • 'fit for purpose' – this means both their everyday purpose, and also any specific purpose that you agreed with the seller (for example, if you specifically asked for a printer that would be compatible with your computer

Under this act I will currently say that it does not do "as described" or is "fit for purpose" - failing on two major points of this act.

Yellow spots over 40°C, bad photos, freezes, movement is not continuous. Discharges while using on TV (charger plugged in). I really want to give the phone away and take my money back... but thats not possible. Last hope ICS... If not, good bye SONY forever.
