Backup and Restore for Arc

I have done an experimentation..

I installed SE's Backup and Restore package in my Arc and it works ok.. Why did SE abandon this app?  If I knew that I could use this to restore my data from x10, I won't go a long way to use third party application to export and import SMS and contacts.

However, I just restored the Contact and SMS... I don't restore System Settings as I know this would mess up my phone.  So use it with care.

I haven't tried it as I already have the applications installed... But this app seems working fine.. except maybe if you restore system settings, this may create problem..

Anyway, if you want to have the package, here's the link.. xtracted from my "ex" x10 (v2.1)

1. If you've a new Arc then you need to install a file manager application like Adao, from the Andriod Market for example.

2. On your computer unzip the Backup and restore zip and you'll see a file called:

Backup and restore v010935.apk

3. Connect your phone to a computer using the USB cable

4. Mount your SD card by dragging down the bar from the top of the screen on your phone and choosing connect

5. Transfer the APK file from your computer to a folder on the SD card in your phone.

6. Unmount your SD card on the phone. [Same as step 4.]

7. Use the file manager previously installed to navigate to the directory on the SD card you dropped the APK file to.

8. Tap the file name: Backup and restore v010935.apk and it should install.

[You may get a message about needing to allow applications to run that haven't been downloaded from the Andriod Market, as you've manually added the SonyEricsson Backup and Restore application directly to the phone.]

9. As long as you're confident that this is a genuine SE application and not malicious, then you can grant permission by going to Settings -> Applications and check the box for Unknown Sources.

10. Remeber to uncheck this box once you've installed.

I've used this backup and restore to move my contacts across from my Xperia X10 to my Arc and it worked brilliantly.

I only suggest to use this app to backup and restore:

Bookmark

Call Log

Contacts

Market Application (not tested yet)

multimedia Messages

Text messages

I just don't recommend restoring SYSTEM SETTINGS..  Actually it's my practice not to restore System settings from previous version whenever I do an update or reflashing as this might cause some unforseen conflicts.

As what GabeD suggest...

Anyway, I guarantee that this package is "malicious script" free.  I just did some experimentation and extract it from x10 system.  I had a hard time migrating my data from x10 to Arc before, so i thought, why would everyone have to go through that way?  So here's a short cut for all "ex" x10 users.

Anyway, you can use this to backup and restore all data but SYSTEM SETTINGS.  Don't restore SYSTEM SETTING using this app.. it might work.. but do it at your risk.

Reason why you can't use this to backup and restore SYSTEM SETTINGS:

- This application was based on x10 setting structures

- Arc has more settings than x10

- Some settings in x10 are omitted in Arc

- Some settings in x10 could create conflict with Arc setting structures

You could still use this feature and it might work (high possibility), but you have been warned.

Restore System Setting at your own risk.  Sorry, I can't test this specific feature for now as Im using my Arc on daily basis...
