<p>Does the x compact support otg... Having bought one and found out mhl is gone and it won't cast to my TV which has cut its use by half its now about to go in the bin as I can't now copy stuff to it like I could with my z3.</p>

It does support OTG; I bought the SanDisk Ultra 128 GB Dual USB Flash Drive USB 3.0 Type-C (which only works with OTG supported devices) and it worked perfectly fine. Also if you want to make sure your device supports OTG you can download apps like "USB OTG Checker" from Google play.
