External disk drive

I have a VGN-T1XP/L and would like to buy an external HDD to transfer files between PC and laptop and to free up some of the pressure on the internal HDD which keeps on getting full C&D drives.
Is there anything I need to know? I have heard that some laptops won't recognise a HDD that is harder than the main internal drive - would that be a problem. I have 40GB (in principle) and am interesting in buying 60-80 GB as an external drive.

i have a 60GB notebook and a Maxtor One Touch 300GB external drive and have no problems with it.

I've ordered it online so it's not arrived yet but it's a Toshiba slim notebook Hard Drive 2.5" MK8025GAS 80GB. Bought from ebay so it looks like it's a 2.5 internal put in an external enclosure and I don't know the spec the enclosure. Spec at http://www.toshiba-europe.com/storage/Index.asp?page=PFT&nav=ISH_PRS. The disk is new with full warranty.
