So I've been looking around all these different forums trying to find out how to get it past 2.3.2. My phone isn't activated, so I guess that could be part of the problem, but I'm no expert.
What I've tried:
1. Factory reset then try any/all of 2 through x
2. Update Service (returns as "No new software is available for your phone")
3. PC Companion ("No phone connected")
4. PC Companion->Repair Phone: returns "The online server is overloaded"
5. Settings->About Phone->Software Update->Update now->Check for Updates is greyed out
Ultimately, none of the updating matters if I can't do what I want with the device: If I get an XPeria Play (not necessarily this one) to Gingerbread, will I still be forced to use a NativeActivity to get touchpad events? Or will I be able to use a regular activity and the google SDK?
thanks!

That answers the first part of my question. Thanks!
How about the second one about the touchpads? Everything seems to point to the fact that it'll still require a NativeActivity, but I need to be sure.

Thanks for the quick response again. Looks like I get to do things the ol' fashioned way.
