Z5 Compact Touchscreen Problems II

I would like to start a new thread regarding issues with the phone's touchscreen since the original thread here was marked as solved in March 2016, but the promised update doesn't exist or doesn't seem to resolve the issue.

I have a black Z5 Compact since November 2015. For some months now my touchscreen has been acting weird. After some minutes of usage the lower half of the screen is partially overreacting - meaning repetitve and/or displaced input - and partially not reacting at all. The issue appears to be triggered faster when the phone is being charged (also when using the original charger and cable), and considering the higher temperature of the phone during this time, the problem could be connected to overheating. In any case, the problem can be solved temporary by switching the screen off and on. However, since it can happen every few minutes, this is not a permanent solution. I tried several of the suggested fixes, namely removing the additional case, switching to safe mode, removing the sd card and even repairing and updating the phone using PC Companion (including losing lots of data). The last one apparently even increased the frequency of the problem.

I'm disappointed by Sony and right now I'm not thinking of buying another phone of the company since these problems emerged already when the phone was introduced and the promised solution was apparently removed in a later update. But I'm also not willing to give up an otherwise really good phone that's just 2 years old and I hope that Sony will remember how to treat their customers especially if they want to keep them.

No, I'm just thinking of possible faults if the grounding plate is touching or interfering with the digitizer... there's a little copper plate that bends over the rest of the USB inside, the left has the vibration motor, and the right side has the speaker, that's what's around that area..

It may require a new digitizer

Can you enable developers options, and then enable

"Show Taps" and "Show Pointer location"

Then dial *#*#SERVICE#*#*

Goto

SERVICE TESTS >> Touch

"Free Drawing Test"

Then start testing the display

Look for any erratic behaviour where the White Circle Cursor Indicator starts jumping away from point of contact

Thanks for your help. I tested it but i cant show you a trace. The touchscreen works fine in the upper part but when i come close to the main buttons it starts clicking very fast without lifting the finger, starting a new trace each time.  Btw Android Version is now 7.1.1, ModelNr. E5823

Screen Record

Has the device ever been dropped while charging?

The grounding plate lives in that area for the battery

Also in Developers Options in the Graphics section, Enable

"Disable HW Overlays" and see if that has any effect

Here's a link to a record i made. https://youtu.be/WUYIIKwL6aM At the end you can see what i mean by repetitive clicking etc.

As i said, i have the phone since 2 years. I dont remember dropping the phone during charging but it's possible of course. If the grounding plate was damaged would it be possible to repair it? Maybe even by myself? It's no longer under warranty anyway.

Disabling HW Overlays didn't help.

Hi y'all. I have the same issue where  the bottom inch  of the screen becomes  un responsive or hyper responsive after it heats up. Like the OP says locking and unlocking the screen again fixes the issue for approximately 10 minutes. I'll try the developer options tests and post results.

I ordered a new touchscreen, was not too expensive luckily. I'll exchange it, see if it works and come back with results. Thanks for the help!

np, be careful if you're doing a DIY,

there are a lot of grounding points of other components that attach on the inner frame that need to be secure when reassembling

Alright, I finally changed the Digitizer/Display and it seems to work. Took a little while because i first ordered the Digitizer only and i had to order the Digitizer/Display combi. Exchange wasnt that difficult, i used the video here. I'm having problem with the adhesive but besides from that it works fine. Thanks to you, NeoBeum!
