I have noticed this a various amount of times on my Xperia Z5 since I have bought it on contract last August.
Occasionally, when the device is hot and on max brightness (though this is not all the time), the sides of the screen's brightness flicker (does not happen on min. brightness). I've noticed this happened after a firmware update when the phone is quite hot, however it does not happen all the time. If you put a gray background, when this happens, you can clearly see it, it doesn't seem to happen with any other colors (on a full static color); it does happen on multiple colours (e.g. the home screen)
I can't seem to record or take a picture of this happening as it is not visible when taking a picture, but this video on youtube seems to explain it quite well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaGPgP_mmcQ
I cannot see anyone in these forums talking about this issue, I guess it's just bad luck...
Steps I've taken
A live chat to Sony and they told me to send it in for repair, but my problem is that this issue is not present all of the time, and when Sony get hold of the smartphone they may not see this problem... Any confirmation from Sony if a warranty repair covers this will be great.
Solved! Go to Solution.
Phone has rebooted and issue still seems present on the boot animation.
I guess it is the actual display...
Wow.
I guess it is partially fixed it is un-noticeable generally but going into the Service Test menu and putting it on a grey background and the problem still remains. However, at least now I can finally use my phone in peace without getting distracted from that flicker. I guess the flicker will come back at some point...
I was having the same issue
But after the recent software update 32.3.A.2.33
I'm not seeing this issue.
I can see in video, you are not on the latest software Nougat.

The video is from an Xperia Z1, I cannot record it on my other phone as you cannot see it in camera. I just put that video to show what the problem looks like as it is hard to explain.
I am on 32.3.A.2.33 but I am now doing a Software Repair through Xperia Companion, hopefully this shall fix it, but I doubt it's a software problem as I have had this happen on lollipop since last year.
Funnily enough, this was more frequent after I updated from the previous nougat firmware to this one.
A Software Repair should do a clean install and to be honest my phone really needs one. It has updated from Lollipop to Marshmallow and now Nougat without data being wiped between each new Android base. This clean install should tell us whether or not it is a software related problem; it could be possible as it is not happening on the Xperia splash screen but does happen on the Xperia boot animation; (e.g. when the kernel is initialized, just right after the splash screen disappears and the white waves animation starts).
I will report back this this solves it for me.

Now again I'm having that problem.
But only in full brightness.
I'm pretty sure that my display is fine.
Software issues i guess.:smileysad:
i have the same problem in full brightness.with my Z5.
