Z1 (KitKat .687) + Toyota Touch & Go = No Deep Sleep

Hi Everyone.

I'm just installing a bugfix for Kitkat but I observed (repeatable) problem with .687 firmware when used with Toyota Touch & Go (for example recent Toyota Yaris, Auris, Verso).

The problem:

When you pair a Z1 running Android 4.4.2 with T&G using Bluetooth it will connect just fine. You may not notice anything. But when you enter power management you will see that the phone is "Active" all the time.

If you run any app like CPU Spy and see CPU states you will notice that the phone stuck in 300 MHz mode.

Additionaly after connecting to T&G my Z1 refuses to connect with any other car without restarting the phone (but it can connect to the T&G that caused a problem).

Of course due to lack of Deep Sleep battery is drained much faster than it should and the phone runs hot.

Preparation steps:

1. You need Toyota car with Toyota Touch or Toyota Touch & Go (navigation) system

2. Enable bluetooth in Z1 running Kitkat .687 firmware

3. Pair phone with T&G

4. Z1 will connect just fine. All functions like calling, address book, messages, bluetooth audio, internet access will be working fine

Steps to repeat the problem:

1. Enter the car & start it

2. Wait for the phone to connect

3. Wait minute or two (just like minimal normal trip)

4. Turn off the car (it will disconnect from the phone)

Now leave the phone unused for a while then check "Activity" in power settings. You will notice that all the time the phone is active and any CPU state scanner will show it stuck in 300 MHz speed state.

Temporary (annoying if you need to do everytime you leave the car) remedium:

1. Turn off bluetooth using quick settings menu

2. Turn on bluetooth

Sometimes it is not enough and you need to restart the phone, turn bluetooth off again and turn on.

I also observed that restarting phone withour prior turning bluetooth off does not help and CPU is still stuck in 300 MHz or higher speeds.

Moreover when I leave T&G car and enter another car (which my phone is already paired and not causing any problems) it refues to connect. I need to go through bluetooth on/off, phone restart path. Other accesories (smartwatch 2) connect just fine.

It wasn't a problem on Jelly Bean 4.3 firmware, also my wife's Z1 Compact running 4.3 doesn't have any problems with this scenario. It began with update to 4.4.2 firmware.

Until it's resolved I'm not updating her Z1C to Kitkat. Now I'm installing .757 firmware. I will check if this bug is still present in updated version.

And not to going off topic but if I could I would roll-back my Z1 to 4.3 until all those problems will be fixed, because the phone is working sluggish, messaging app is crushing from time to time, animations between activities are slow and annoing and I observed 4 random watchdog restarts without any reason.

Fixed in 14.4.A.0.108. Just checked with Touch & Go firmware 2.9.4L. Works fine. Phone goes back into deep sleep.

I've had the same issue with my Z1 Compact which I've started a thread in the Z1C section and my phone rarely goes to deep sleep.

I restarted my phone and cleared cache and stuff in my app section and it went back to deep sleep but when I used bluetooth again it came back but I don't fancy having to restart my phone all the time...

I can confirm that the issue is still present after update.

Sony Xperia Z1 (Polish, not from the carrier) C6903. Firmware 14.3.A.0.757

Toyota Touch & Go firmware 1.7.2L (most recent)

Steps to repeat the problem:

1. Turn on the radio, wait as it connect to the phone

2. Wait a minute or two

3. Turn off radio, leave the car

Steps to recover from problem:

1. Turn bluetooth off

2. Wait 10 - 15 seconds

3. Turn bluetooth on

Repeatability: Everytime

Period on the "Activity" bar when screen is off but the phone is active (very long) is the time, when deep sleep was not working. I wasn't even nearby the car during at least half (inner) of the time when the phone was active.

After turning off/on bluetooth activity was related only to active phone operation with screen on.

Hi SergioPL,

I'm going to try your temporary solution...

After Step 3 for recover, do you switch bluetooth off afterwards?

On .757 it seems that after leaving car or disconnecting from the bluetooth device that causes the problem it is enough to turn bluetooth off, wait as it turns gray (in quick settings menu) and turn back on.

No elegant but working solution.

Any update on this subject? I have tried PCC/SUS restore, also tried removing and pairing car again. No luck.

There is something on the bluetooth stack that despite of disconnecting from the car audio keeps CPU active until bluetooth is turned off/on again (which is annoing by itself, also because of smartwatch).

There is no reply as of yet, here's my thread about the same problem......

I've already emailed Sony and they told me to repair install the firmware 😕 so now I'm waiting for my second email to be answered.

Yes. That's the same problem. Let us know if you get something worth mentioning. I will report to Xperia Care too.

I have already reported the problem to Toyota Motor Poland but I don't blame the car for the faulty phone firmware (worked fine on 4.2 and 4.3).

I just got an email back from Sony who have said that my 2014 model ford fiesta may not be compatible with the Z1 and to contact ford Anguished_Face

I have been playing around with Toyota Corolla (Europe) equipped with Toyota Touch 2.

Mirrorlink in Xperia is not compatible with Toyota implementation.

SMS sharing causes deep sleep bug too. So we have at least 3 different car audio systems that fail to work with Z1 under KitKat.
