Hello,
a couple of days ago i bought a Xperia Z1 Compact. From the beginning it told me there was a firmware update which fails to install. I did some research and apparently I'm note alone with my problem but none of the information I could find helped me.
If I try updating via "update center" it fails with the error message "could not verify".
If I try it via "Sony Bridge for Mac" the phone shuts down during the update process and the update fails.
"reason: UE communication failed (code 2003, text: The phone contains modified software that cannot be updated"
I have no modified software. The phone is as I took it out of the box...
I've tried a factory reset already.
What are my options?
Actually I don't really care about the firmware update but if there is a bigger update I might want which fails for the same reasons after I set up my phone I would be pretty annoyed. Anyway it's not a good start with a new device.
thank you

Dial *#*#7378423#*#* then open Configuration and the bottom line take not of
If it says
Bootloader unlocked: Yes then it's unlocked and this is your problem
Bootloader unlock allowed: Yes then it's locked but can be unlocked
Bootloader unlock allowed: No then it can't be unlocked and is hard locked
If you do have option 1 then return it as you will have lost your DRM keys meaning features associated with the camera and music features and others will cease to work and may never work, As said they will be able to contact Sony and confirm the date of the application for the unlock key and email address used and then be able to compare this to your purchase date,
However and this is a big however could anyone have gained access to your device to do this - I must also point out that this has to be done on the phone with a Pc and can't be done without the device
Sounds like you have either rooted or have acquired a device where the bootloader has been unlocked which if is the case should be taken back as they will be able to prove you didn't do based on when the request for the unlock key was submitted compared to your purchase date
Is there a way to find out if it's rooted or not? I'm pretty sure I did not do that since I didn't even know about it's existence until I started my research...

It says "bootloader unlocked: yes". So i guess you figured out the problem. The question would be: is there a possibility the relock it or do I need to get a new phone?
I bought it on amazon but it was a "warehouse deal". It should have been a new phone with a damaged packaging but it seems like this wasn't the case. Hopefully no problem to send it back.
thank you!
You can relock it but still some features will be lost and you'll never get these back
With the latest release of Flashtool it is now possible to relock bootloader.
Download the latest flashtool from below and extract and install
