Hello everyone.
A week ago I bought the xperia zl phone and I tried to also use the pre installed "Remote Control" App to use the built in Infrared blaster. I can't make it work though. What I did is:
- I manually installed two deviceds (projecter / av receiver).
- Through the remote control software I programmed some keys in holding the original remote of the device in front of the infrared blaster of the ZL. The Remote Control App told me that it 'Learnt the command'. I then saved everything and tried to use the programmed button but both deviced don't react. It seems the infrad signal is not sent out.
- I also tried to hold the infrared blaster of the zl really close to the deviced - still no reaction.
Do I miss something? Does infrared have to be switched on seperately? I checked in the apps and all Remote Control Apps / Service seem to be running.
I did uninstall / disable some sony apps before but I don't think I disabled relevent apps for the remote control to work....
Anyone having the same problem? or a solution
?
Michael
Solved! Go to Solution.
Update, I just got a call from support again. This time I managed to get some specifics.
It turns out, it's a hardware production defect that was fixed from batches onward of 2013 week 18.
I now know for a fact that I got a faulty unit back: my swap device was from week 17, something Sony can trace based on the IMEI.
Anyway, I was offered another swap device. But this time, I have to send it in to my local NL Sony office rather than the German support company. Apparently, they'll take care of this personally now, getting me a unit that's guaranteed to have been produced in 2013 week 18 or later.
Will be interesting to get a phone working conform specs, roughly half a year later than I originally intended to use it!
Offtopic: when I removed the cap insert my SIMcard in my swap unit, the cap itself came off completely. The strap that should've kept it affixed to the device wasn't attached. Hope that won't happen with my new one.
Hi all,
of course my ZL has the same problem...
Coolasrevi I think you're the only one here with a working IR learning ZL. What manufacturing date has yours? You can find the date when unfolding the label where the SIM and the SD are. Mine is from 13W06
Bouvrie, please keep us up to date!

In the xda forum some are suggesting that upgrade to 4.3 can resolve the issue, is that true? Can anyone confirm that?
I recieved refund of Rs 34,990 as per my Bill amount. I bought this Xperia ZL on 14th March 2013.
Somehow I feel getting latest batch manufactured handset is not so feasible as per SONY. They might have huge stock piled up globally hence why they would produce more. This particular model was sidelined by Z which had good sales.
This must be the reason they prefered to Refund me.
It was not so easy followup with SONY and Service Center team. If you are really interested in getting refund you should be ready for marathon chase.
I suggest. first you buy one standby but good handset which will suffice for your routine work, Then Submit this Xperia ZL to Sony Service Center. They may provide you brand new handset, but rare chances it could support IR learning. You will have to keep on creating one job number after another. Just to summarise I had to create 3 job numbers in span of around 75 days.
If you are not mentally prepared I suggest use your ZL without this feature anyway its overall good phone.
Starting to not support sony's products
Small update: I sent in my phone to my national Sony Mobile office. Despite the ZL not being released in my market, I really hope this third time's a charm.
Will keep you posted.
Thanks for keeping us up to date Bouvrie!
@Coolasrevi: What manufacturing date does your ZL have?
UPDATE: Yesterday I got back my Xperia Zl replaced (swaped) by company service center and got the latest manufactured mobile of October 2013 and Now My IR-blaster learning function working properly..
Tip:Those who want to get this feature working in their mobile,There is only one method to achieve this , which i followed..
I claimed the ADP(Accident Damage Protection) Only because of this issue..
Because here In india, No one will understand your problem ,even i tried my best to convey my problem to their service employees, their boss..
But At Last I have to CLAIM Accident Damage Protection for this issue..
And Got my Xperia Zl brand new with in 15 days of overall conversation
