Xperia Z1 compact - Unread email

My email inbox continually shows 1 unread email even though there are no unread items in my inbox.

I'm using a POP3 account and have deleted all the mail in my inbox but this has no effect. I have also gone 'Sort' and selected sort by 'thread' and other sort options as suggested in another email on this forum but this has not worked either.

Would greatly appreciate if somebody could come up with a solution to this?

There's two things I can think of trying

1st Open Settings then Apps and swipe to All - Locate and open your email app then tap on Force stop and Clear cache and data and reboot and test

2nd Send an email to yourself and then see if that will clear the phantom email after you open and delete it

Many thanks Thommo, the first option you gave me worked. After I flushed the cache I had to input the the settings again and download all email again but it solved the issue which was irritating.
